got home with golytely~ugh

ok so I went to get my scrip filled.......so much for cheap. It was $22.00! Uhhhhh I could have fed my family for a few days on that. Anyway~I just dont get it. The pharmacist wants me to drink the entire jug. 8 ounces every 10 minutes until it is all gone. I am sure that I will throw it up. The saltyness of it will make my mouth water and in turn encourage me to have a gag reflex. WHY DO I HAVE TO DRINK IT ALL??? I know it was important since I was having some reconstruction on my bowels......c'mon,if I follow a liquid diet from supper ther night before I have to drink this then there really shouldnt be anything to flush out.

I am starting to freak out......I just dont think I can drink all of it.

I forgot to thank my doctor today for not making me drink that stuff, but he so gently reminded me that I have to pick up the enema and douche and that if I do not he will not perform surgery. He has no problem telling me straight, I think that is why I like him so much, no guessing. Good luck and I have read about different ways to drink it, chill it, mix it with juice, your favorite flavor kool-aid. Hopefully one of those methods will work for you. Good luck to you.

Hi Lesa,

There are a lot of tips out there for the go-lytley (what a mis-nomer that is -- lightly?! NOT). What worked for me was:
  • Chill the heck out of it.
  • Hold your nose (it really does work)
  • Use a straw (helps bypass some of the taste buds)
  • Have something else to drink handy while you're doing the deed.
  • Keep busy
  • Buy some Tucks or rear end wipes for your butt.
  • Put a moratorium on the bathroom -- you definitely don't want anyone else borrowing your throne during that time.

Check with your doc before mixing in some kind of flavorant other than what was provided. Mine said nothing red or orange, so I used green Kool-aid (let's just say after a while all that was left in the toilet bowl was prettily colored)

Good luck to you. It was an awful experience. But, I realized that was just the first step in the surgery/recovery process, and it felt so good to finally be taking ACTION instead of waiting and worrying. It somehow made it more "real" for me, and actually helped to calm me down about the whole surgery the next day (gave me something much more immediate to focus on, any way).
