Options after Novasure

Hello,

I'm 43, had tubes tide after birth of my second child, developed super heavy periods, (fibroids - yes) so did Novasure. Well I wasn't one of the lucky ones there. Periods have actually become more painful than before and flow is sporadic.

So today my doctor told me my options are:

Novasure again
Lupron Injections
Vaginal Hysterectomy (keeping ovaries is my choice)

Novasure - I'm not sure I want to try Novasure again; just to be dissapointed...again.

Lupron - Lupron sounds awful. Plus I can't stand needles and subjecting myself to a monthly injection doesn't sound fun.

Hyster - Well, I'm at a loss here.

What experiences have you ladies had? I will have an ultrasound next week and my doctor told me that my thyroid could be contributing to the problem also. Anyone ever heard of your thyroid doing this? Anyway, thyroid check is getting done too.

Thanks Ladies!

Re: Options after Novasure

Hi Sheila43

I had Novasure and it was great for 8 months. My monthly periods wearing just panty liners lasted for at least 3 days. However . . . the fun ended and it somehow stopped working for me. I had continued to bleed from Dec 26 2008 up until March 12, 2009. On March 13th I had another D&C, but, guess what? Period stopped for 2 days and here it comes again. The next alternative I tried (and the last prior to Hysterectomy) was Mirena with hormones. The same story goes, bleeding DID NOT even stopped, albeit the flow was light. Pathology reports from March's D&C showed I had Fibroids and Hyperplasia - the latter was the deciding factor for me to have Hysterectomy as the Mirena did not even worked at all.

I avoided Hysterectomy - I was ready but scared!

Believe me, I tried pretty much anything available before I had decided to go for the big H. I even had a 2nd opnion.

So on June 19, 2009, I had m TAH (Total Abdominal Hysterectomy) bikini cut. Both uterus and cervix are gone but both ovaries are intact. Nothing wrong with these.

I knew I had Fibroids (one the size of a medium grapefruit) and Hyperplasia but after Hysterectomy, further pathology reports showed I had Adenomyosis, Cervical Adenocarcinoma with invasion less thatn ¼ of the uterine wall.

I am very happy I did the surgery!

I am slowly healing and I know I have plenty of healing to do. Having had the surgery, I can say that I am very satisfied, very much content – no more prolonged bleeding, the gynecologic cancer is gone, no radiation or chemo required.

I have this feeling of relief that my monthly inconvenience of periods is a thing of the past with the sensation that I can now get on with my life in a more positive manner.

*** So after Novasure, it was Mirena with hormones for me ****

I wish you luck, keep reading the experiences of the other sisters on this site. It helped me quite a bit.

You alone would know what is right for your body. Explore this site as there are so much experiences to gain from. We love you!!!!

Re: Options after Novasure

I had Novasure done Jan. 07. It reduced my periods to normal for 1 yr. In Jan 08 I started skiping periods but having really bad cramping amd bloating like my period was going to start any minute. After a year I finally went to a new gyno. After talking to me for 5 minutes she said " you have adenomyosis " The only positive dx. and cure is hysterectomy. I wasn't ready to get hysterectomy so i was controlling my symptoms with prometrium. Very shortly thereafter, I started getting really sharp lower abdominal pain, and a period that wouldn't end. I had an ultrasound and it showed a 7cm fibroid. Because of my age 51, possible adeno, and already had an ablation, my only option left was Hysterectomy. I had a LSH 3/13/09. pathology showed fibroid filled with old brown blood and severe adenomyosis.

That is my story ....i read that Novasure cannot be repeated !

Re: Options after Novasure

Thanks for the info ladies. I was surprised that my doc said we could try Novasure again. She said it can be done, but I got the feeling she figured it would fail again.

I had the most unnerving dream last night about having a hysterectomy! It really rattled me and woke me up. I'm usually not one to get to worked up over medical issues, but for some reason this has really hit me hard.

...Think I might need to have a martini tonight, lol! Maybe that will help take the edge off!

Re: Options after Novasure

Hello,
I am in the same boat as you.
I had the Novasure done in the spring of 2006 and had great success until last fall when my cycle started back. I only had a same flow but the cramps and pain in my right side were back. An ultrasound found nothing so I was put back on Prometrium, which I thought, would stop the periods but has not. To make matter worse, it hurts when my hubby and I have sex so that was a alarm for my doctor.
I was schedule for a vaginal hysterectomy on 9/2/09 but this has been moved up to 8/19/09. I had talked myself out of the surgery but after a painful weekend with cramps and pain that almost made me sick; I have decided to go with the surgery.
I am glad to know that I was not the only one who fell into the 40% range of the Novasure.
My prayers are with you.....

Re: Options after Novasure

Hello Sisters

Reading from your experiences with Novasure, we all had it great while it worked for some time. When Novasure DID NOT work for me, I had asked my Dr to repeat the procedure one more time. I was told we need to explore another alternative (Mirena with hormones) because if Novasure DID NOT work, what makes me think that it will work the 2nd time. I did agree with her as with the Mirena, I had nothing to lose.

As I had previously mentioned, Mirena DID NOT work for me too. I know in my heart (4 years had avoided hyst) that I made the right decision in having the hysterectomy. Now after the hyst, further pathology reports suggested various diseases which could only be detected once the hyst was performed.

NJ2CA, I too had Adenomysis, Fibroids (1 was the size of a med grapefruit), Hyperplasia Cervical Adenocarcinoma.

I am happy that I had decided to go for the hyst; if I had waited longer, my situation would probably have gone for the worst.

Hysterectomy is one treatment for a number of diseases and conditions. If you have cancer of the uterus or ovaries or hemorrhage (uncontrollable bleeding) of the uterus, this operation may save your life. In most other cases, a hysterectomy is an elective procedure. The operation is done to improve the quality of life: to relieve pain, heavy bleeding or other chronic conditions and discomfort.

There may be other ways of treating or dealing with these problems. Together with your doctor you should weigh all the alternatives and effects of the different choices to help you decide what is right for you. I am not a doctor but it sure helps that my siblings are in the health field along with my own research and 2nd opinions.

Sheila43 and Lindy_va and others in waiting, we wish you all the best.

Re: Options after Novasure

Hi ladies,

Well I had an ultrasound last week. Blood showed up but guess what.... not menstruating at the time. I had just finished a week before. Geeeezzz.

I have an appointment tomorrow for my annual 'V for Victory' but I am sure ready for the doctor to tell me what is going on in there with this blood.

I am/was really hoping to put off having the big H until after the first of the year. I sure hope that I will be able to do that.

Re: Options after Novasure

I had my endo biobsy today and the 'happy pill' they had me take didn't do squat for me!

On the up side, my surgery is now scheduled for Aug 19th! I'm so ready to get this over and done! No more pain, bleeding, taking extra clothes for the stupid accidents...

I'm actually starting to get excited! Woo Hoo! No more junk to deal with!
