Lazy Boy Chair or no?

Curious where it's most comfortable to sit and lay down? I am getting rid of the lazy boy chair from my sons room. I don't want it in my family room but will keep it for now if easier. I'm having an A and P repair, with a Vaginal Hysterectomy ( possible Abdominal Hysterectomy). Will I be able to lean and pull the handle to sit up? The couch is softer. I can prop up on pillows so I'm not always laying down. Hoping I can sleep in my bed but if not maybe the chair will work better than the couch b/c I'd slouch less having more support of my back. Thoughts??

Re: Lazy Boy Chair or no?

While the actual sitting was comfy for me in my recliner, I found it *very* hard to get up out of...I sat in it maybe 3x. But that was last week when I was only a couple days post op. I'll have to try it again now that I'm in my 2nd week post op....having a much easier time moving around this week.

If you have one like ours they can be really hard to get closed. I struggle to close the footrest now without surgery. They would be really comfy but yes, may be a challenge to get out of. Maybe if someone can close the footrest for you.

Yes! I had TAH BSO and I rented a lift recliner which has been such a blessing.

Re: Lazy Boy Chair or no?

Initially for the first week or so, I could not handle sleeping in bed. The recliner was wonderful! While my husband was home the first week he would help put the foot rest down. By week two I was able to maneuver well enough that I could do it on my own. Don't know what I would have done without the recliner!

Re: Lazy Boy Chair or no?

Most definately keep the chair. Use cushions for support if needed.
There were days and nights when I slept in mine because of discomfort. You will go through various pain stages and a lazy boy chair is worth having. Don't worry about the foot rest, just relax and ask for help to get out if "stuck".
Good luck with it all

Re: Lazy Boy Chair or no?

Just wondering why sleeping in bed might be difficult? (I'm beginning to wish I had a recliner!)

It may depend on how you sleep Pam. I normally sleep on my side, and after my c-sections the pressure of my tummy hanging to one side was quite painful. I was however able to sleep in bed just fine with a body pillow, using the pillow to support my tummy. I am even going to bring my body pillow to the hospital as I don't sleep very well on my back. (I suffer from insomnia and if I don't get into a good position have a lot of trouble sleeping)

If you sleep on your back, it probably won't be an issue, but if you sleep on your tummy or side it may be more difficult.

If need be you can always set yourself up with a ton of pillows on your couch rather than a lazy boy. We have a lazy boy but I don't find them comfortable, so during the day I will just use plenty of pillows on the couch to get comfy.

I hope this helps, even thought I haven't had my hysterectomy yet, I figure it is the same area so should be similar for recovery.

I'm a side sleeper and have not slept in bed since surgery 2-16. Getting down and comfortable is one issue but for me, getting up is a real challenge. I'm single and the thought of feeling trapped when I want to move or having to use the restroom in the middle of the night, well....I hate that feeling. I try every couple of days Even to be in that position for 20 minutes feels like a treat. (Now it is more difficult since I'm caring for open wound).

I tested out recliners beforehand and my renting the lift.recliner.has been a life saver. I push myself to do more on my own but there are times of intense pain and the perks of the chair being high to sit on or to help me up is great. I felt more independent.

I hope this helps!

It sounds like it has been a good idea for you.

It is certainly a challenge getting up from lying flat when you have a surgery wound on your lower abdomen. If I remember correctly from my c-sections, I got up from my side VERY slowly after moving my body pillow aside. It was quite a challenge to maneuver but it was doable. It will be interesting to see if it is the same with a hysterectomy. I hope so because I can't sleep very well on my back, but if I have to I will just use a ton of pillows to sit myself up a bit more. It probably doesn't hurt that our bed is quite high from the ground too.

I think I would be tempted to hire a lift recliner too if I were single. You will no doubt have to get up a lot more than someone who has others in the house to get things and prepare meals etc.

I hope you are able to get back into your bed soon!
