Ok Now I am terrified
OK, now I'm spooked !!
I have had a couple of nightmares since I got my date set about not breathing! Is this really a thing that the morphine causes? I know it's one of those silly "never-had-a-major-operation" things, but I didn't realize that morphine makes you not want to breath!

Fortunately, it really didn't cause me any problems. Actually I found it amusing from my standpoint to try to outwit the nurses. LOL! lilly007 seems to have had a worse reaction. We're all different, but be not afraid! You'll see, and you'll be feeling better in no time!

Don't be terrified...be in control!
Equint....It doesn't "make" you stop breathing from a physical standpoint - I don't think...I just remember not wanting to breathe. It is NOT respiratory arrest. It's just respiratory laziness, I guess.
I think that Swelz had the same experience...realizing that if you don't breathe, you can slip back into some unconscious state while some of the anethesia drugs are still in you...and taking advantage of it. I wouldn't recommend it and will be really aware of this tendency of mine should I have any future surgeries.
In my case, because I have narcolepsy, the nurses were freaked out. Not many nurses or doctors are given training on sleep disorders, so they all think that sleep disorders are about breathing problems and snoring. Narcolepsy has nothing to do with breathing problems...but in their effort to be caustious, they cut off my morphine. Additionally, when a narcoleptic brain isn't working well, we can't speak easily. So, I could only make grunts...Ugh! When I finally saw my dear boyfriend's face and he could speak and act for me...then things started to become more clear....and I got the morphine drip started. He took one look at me and knew that I couldn't speak. I felt a world of relief when I finally saw his face and could see that he knew what to do.
Another complication that I had that was unexpected is that my face swelled from the mask that is used in anethesia. So, when I woke up, I didn't have an O2 mask or nose air going - they didn't know why I reacted to the rubbery plastic on the anethesia mask. I don't know why either. I no problems with it in January when I had the laprascopy..except during that procedure, anethesia was only given by I.V. and the anethesia mask was used only breifly at the beginning of the falling-to-sleep process. They use a combination of things depending on the type and length of your surgery. Because of the swelling, I didn't have any passive air to help urge me to breathe when I was waking up...they were afraid that the passive air mask would also make my face swell. Again, the nurses were being cautious. (and did I mention that they were crabby
Please don't worry about this...just know that you will hear your nurse tell you to breathe and then you should breathe. All will be just fine after that. You'll have a few hours of yucky pain, but you will endure. Eventually, you'll figure out how to get comfortable and what you personally need to manage your pain and recovery.
The interesting thing about this whole discussion is that it does prove that we have incredible control over our bodies. You will have that control too...just use it to your benefit
Good luck!

Morphine slows breathing
Equinut...I did a quick check on the internet and it seems that morphine "slows" breathing. So, it won't cause you to stop breathing - only you can control that! Not recommended!

Ok Now I am terrified
Hello everone I'm home. I feel so much bettter,They did not have to cut me open Thank-God I fell so lucky. I was never on a morapanie drip. They gave me an epideramal in my spine and I beliveve I had dalita (however you spell that)threw that at times)so I never had tubes in my throat and no moriphine at all. Once I was out they stopped the dalita and went with demerol shoot and lortab tablets. I did not like my leggs numb however I think it was a better option for me my oxgen stayed great and I never had to use that breating thing afterwards. Being a smoker I think that was the best choice. The nurse that took care of me also had the same thing sone to her and she said its alot better for smokers also you don't get nauseous.Thursaday I was so sick going in with my back hurting and cramps because I started. Wow what a differance and home at 9:00a.m. today. Good luck to all I need to get a nap now write later. Still not sure how to use this site but I'll get it

Jenell - what did they do??
Jenell...tell us what your doctor ended up doing. Did you have a total hysterectory? Did they leave ovaries? You are home so fast...maybe that's due to having the epidural. Great! Are you walking? How's the bladder and bowel functioning? The bowel movement part was the most difficult for me - still can be troublesome.
Well...get lots of rest and control your pain! Glad to hear you on the "other side" now!

I was told from my doctor it is normal to have oxygen with stong pain medications and I had mine the first night then they took it off.
Believe me what your thinking is worse than it will be. It was that way for me.

Ok Now I am terrified
Lillyoo7, they did a lavh with both overies removed and cervix, uterus, tubes. I felt so good yesterday however today has not been so great. No bowl movement as of yet. I'm sure that will ease things up once I go.I started sneezing around 5:00 this morning and it has been down hill all day.No one can believe that I was home so soon and maybe it was because of the epidural.I had it done at a surgrey center and I was the only one that spent the night had two nurses so they took good care of me and kept me out of pain. What an experience!!Dr. said he could not find my right ovarie so that remains a mystery. Had past surgery in 91 so he asked if they may have taken it at that time. But I don't recall them ever telling me at that time. So I guess I need to find out. Dr. says not to worry but It has me baffeled now.Yes I'm walking pretty good and eating pretty good. Yeserday I had a cheesburger from Wendys boy was it good but wrong choice--------what was I thinking? Where are you from says midwest?? Talk with ya later Jennell
