Hi All,

I had my TAH on Fri, March 30. I was so worried beforehand, but it went by amazingly well. I was operated on at about 2 p.m. (I saw the clock in the operating room before I was put out) and my mom says I came out of recovery at about 6 p.m. I don't remember much the first few hours. The nurses had me stand that night about 11:30 p.m. It was not bad.

The next day (March 30) I took my shower, but unfortunately was unable to pee when they took the catheter out, so the catheter was placed back in and drained over 200 cc's of urine. I did do several strolls around the floor with rest periods in between. I was on a liquid diet until about 10 p.m. when I was able to get a "box lunch".

The next day (April 1) they took the catheter out again and I was able to pee! Then they told me I was going home. No April Fools about it! I filled my prescriptions for Percocet and Ibuprofen 600 and picked up a bottle of Milk of Magnesia on the way home. (I had passed gas, which I found out was not a requirement for going home as I had expected, but had not had a BM) I took the Milk of Mag that afternoon and the next morning and was able to have a BM on Monday!

My prescriptions say to take 1 pill every 6 hours as needed so I take an Ibuprofen and then 3 hours later I take a Percocet, then 3 hours later an Ibuprofen, etc. It seems to work for me. I do have some discomfort because you can't have invasive surgery like that and not feel it at all no matter what kind of drugs you are on.

It's hard for me to pamper my inner princess because I am single and living with my mom (73 years old with two hip replacement sugeries in 2005) and am used to being the one who does the things that need to be done around here. I have gone out and done errands (someone else has done the driving) like banking and grocery shopping (but I did not load or unload the groceries).

Now I think I may be paying for it because I have had some bleeding, which scares me. (I did not expect to have vaginal bleeding ever again. It was the one thing I was looking forward to when I was told I would be having "the H word".) So I will be staying home and only going out for short walks with resting in between for the next couple of days. The walking is not only good for me, but I have been able to get my mom to come out with me and it does her good, too.

I am trying to take it as easy as possible. My timing on this worked out well. I will be out of work for 6 weeks according to my doctor and then on week 7, I am scheduled to go to Las Vegas. It's like a yearly reunion for my mom and her brothers and sisters. My niece will also be able to meet us there, so I definitely want to make sure I am able to go.

All in all, this has gone quite well. It's not at all what I was dreading. So if you are pre op and reading this, I hope it gives you some hope and eases your nervousness about the procedure.

Thanks Hawaii. I do try and drink plenty of water. I start a water bottle and later find that I drank only part of it. I'll have to make a more concerted (sp?) effort to drink more.
