New and scared, too
This is my first post as a newly-diagnosed Hyster Sister. I'm 48 and married with 2 adult children. After suffering with heavy bleeding and clots daily for a year (no change after trying different birth control pills) my family doctor sent my for an ultrasound and following that referred me to a specialist. The OB-GYN told me I had a large fibroid tumor plus complex cysts on one ovary, also thickened lining of the uterus, but I needed a biopsy. He told me we would discuss options after the biopsy (my feeling then was that hysterectomy was the LAST resort). Now the biopsy and a later colposcope has revealed I have dysplasia (stage IV pre-cancer cells), endometriosis, scarring, enlarged uterus, and cervix out of alignment (from the fibroid, maybe). He is recommending a TAH (no options!) and maybe removal of ovaries.
I was initially so depressed at the news I could hardly function. Now I'm trying to think rationally. I'm really scared because since the news my pain has increased - and I don't think it's all psychological. The past few days I have had pain which feels like early to mid labor pains without the contractions. And I can't really bend over without "feeling something there." Is this the fibroid growing suddenly?
Plus after reading several books, I'm scared to death he is going to remove my cervix (because of pre-cancer cells) and maybe my ovaries and I will have a really lousy sex life. My DH is supportive but sex is important to him (and me) so I don't look forward to after the surgery.
Any advice appreciated!

You are going through exactly the same thing I did. I suffered with heavy periods, clotting, pre-cancerous cells, cramping and pelvic pain for the past several years. I was put on numerous birth control pills and even had ablation surgery. Nothing seemed to help. After an ultrasound revealed that I had "large" fibroids, my Dr. recommended a hysterectomy. It took me over a year to agree to this and my fibroids were growing at a rapid rate. In May I had a TVH. It is just amazing that shortly after surgery I noticed the pelvic pain and pressure were gone not to mention all the period stuff. I am extremely happy with my decision to go through with this. I'm 44 with 2 adult sons and feel I have a second chance at life. I kept my ovaries, so I need no HRT. It's a hard choice to make, but I am certianly glad there was this surgical option to free me all these problems. I am 15 weeks post-op and would do it all over again in a heartbeat. My surgery and recovery went uneventful and my husband and I agree sex is no different than before. Good luck with your decision and take as much time as you need.

I can sure relate. I cried when I heard the word "hysterectomy" from my MD. I had kind of wished for one for the last 5 years but when the MD said it I got so scared. It worried me when she said she would need to take the ovaries as well as the cervix. But, after reading lots on this board I've learned that the sex life or anything else for that matter should change without the cervix. In fact it should get alot better with the bleeding, pain, etc etc. I'm just a few days post op but am doing pretty well. Hang in there. Remember if you have it all removed, you won't have the fear of cancer later.

don't be afraid to get a second opinon, do you have the option of keeping your overies, mabye keep one? honey keep your spirits up. try not to think of it as loosing a uteras think off it as getting back a life without pain, that's the only thing that seemed to make it easier to deal with for me.
you'll be in me prayer

Thanks to all for your words of reassurance! This looks like a terrific support group. I will be seeing my doctor on Monday to determine surgery date and details and I will ask about saving at least the one ovary with no major cysts. I see a lot of other posts about the loss of cervix and its effects afterward so I'll check those out.
I think what upset me most was reading a book the other night that was filled with entirely negative experiences from women who had TAH/BSO. However, I realize from reading posts here that it's not all negative, and maybe only the women who have negative results complain. I'll try to be more optomistic!
