Upcoming hysterectomy 4/19: Advice please - concerns re previous c-sections

Happy Saturday!
I am scheduled for a hysterectomy on April 19. I've had 5 c-sections, and have LOTS of scar tissue/adhesions. Looking to hear how other hysterectomies went from those of you who had previous C-sections as well. So glad I found this site! Any info would be greatly appreciated, as I'm a nervous wreck!

I’m hoping more people with personal experience will chime in, but here’s an interesting story from one of our members:

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 4/19: Advice please - concerns re previous c-sections

Hey Yendys86,
I had 3 c-sections and the surgery was VERY different. The air trapped in my chest and around my shoulders lasted a few days and the extreme tiredness as well. The pain, I am lucky to have a very high pain tolerance, so that was never a problem. When you drive home, make sure your current on all meds bc you feel every single small bump. I also had a pillow between my body and the seat belt. This also helps if you cough, holding it down somehow cushions the chain reaction.

I forgot to add, I have a lot of scar tissue as well. There was no problem and they did scrap some of it away. Oh, the pain is different though, it is deep and only a few places, it was strange. I have had other surgeries, wrist, eyelid, ankle... one day you feel great and do some laundry and the next day your down bc your exhausted. Lol. I am 5 months and 1 day, and I find myself doing year work or running 4 miles and the next day... drained.
Good luck!

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 4/19: Advice please - concerns re previous c-sections

Everyone has a different experience.

Having had C-sections before, you should find this hysterectomy to be pretty similar...although there's no lovely baby to have as a reward.

I second what WaJL said, that I felt every tiny bump when I was being taken by wheelchair to the hospital door and on the drive home. But mine was a supracervical hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (there's a mouthful).

If you are a candidate, a laparoscopic procedure should be a lot easier on the body.

I wish you the best of luck with it!

Yours, AliQ

I had 3 csections, gallbladder out, tubes tied before my hysterectomy. It is different for everyone on recovery but do what the dr says and take it easy. Lean on your support (family/friends) to help you out. You got this!

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 4/19: Advice please - concerns re previous c-sections

I had bladder surgery when I was 6 years old and 2 c-sections using the same vertical scar. During my first visit to the Onc/Gyno doc, both she and her resident checked my pelvic region and said my uterus was moving freely and that they didn't think there was much scar tissue to impede them. After surgery they said everything went very well and I've had a great recovery...8+ weeks PO. Haven't really had any major pain....My ACL repair was more painful than this hysterectomy.
Good luck to you!

I'm over 60 yo. Almost 4 months ago I had a Robotic-assisted laparoscopic total hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, lysis of adhesions, vaginal laceration repair due to tear during procedure. All of that was in day surgery. I was home by 9pm. I'm thankful my recovery has gone well and I feel good!
During my recovery I was always surprised how nice it was to be able to sit up from a lying down position and how much easier it was than when I I had my two c-sections.
I did purchase the hyster store pillow with pocket for ice pack and found it to be a great source of comfort on the car drive home and so many other times, too! It was a type of protection for my abdomen. Take Care!

I had 2 c-sections and my Davinci hysterectomy 3 years ago. I also had a lot of scar tissue but she didn’t know until she got in there. I was expecting pain like after a c-section and honestly, I must be the odd one out because my surgery felt like really bad cramps. Only needed to take one ibuprofen during recovery. I walked around my house often and rested when I needed to. You will do fine, deep breaths
