pre op and high blood pressure

I went to my pre op yesterday, and when the nurse took my BP, it was pretty high, like 152/105! It's never been that high! I was standing up however. The nurse really freaked out (I kinda did too) and took it 20 minutes later with me sitting down. Then, it was 142/84. Is it because I'm nervous or what? Should I go on meds before my surgery 10 days?

pre op and high blood pressure

My blood pressure was 150/87 the day of surgery. I'm going to guess that it is probably just nerves. They ended up giving me medicine to calm me down.

Mine was up before surgery too. And right after surgery it went even higher, and stayed that way for quite a while.

However, it started coming down again, and at about 6 weeks post-op it was almost normal again.

I think the pre-op increase was mainly nerves, and post-op was due to the shock to the system, medications and just plain old stress. The more I healed, the better the BP got.

And now I'm at 8 weeks and feeling great. The occasional twinges, but mostly back to regular activities, no more pain meds and way more energy than I had in my anemic painful pre-op days.

Hope you have an easy surgery and a great recovery.

My bp was pretty high, especially while getting prepped for surgery. I doubt that the doctors would put you on anything with only 10 days to go. In that short of a time period, the meds wouldn't have enough time to do much. Most people tend to spike in their bp before surgery, even if they want the surgery.

They monitored my bp before, during, and after my surgery. I'm happy to say that it was normal when I left following my surgery.

I am being checked periodically just to make sure that the higher bp was just due to stress. Make sure they have you sitting down when they take it and try to get to your appointments early so you have time to decompress before being called back to the examining room. Even 15 minutes will help them when they take your reading.

Best of luck to you! We'll be thinking about you in the upcoming days.
