I am having a Total Laparoscopic hysterectomy with the (Davinchi Robot) (sp?) and a Cystoscopy. I think I am more anxious than anything. I am 46, my hubby(of vasectomy) & I have 3 children and I am so ready to not have to bleed again.
I have always had very crampy periods and heavy bleeding the first 3 days. I would also be able to time my cycles like clockwork, always on time every month every 28 days. Up until this year, Back in Feb 2020, out of nowhere I started bleeding between periods. Not cool. At first, I figured it was supposed to happen because I am getting older and it was time for me to go through the "change" and this was part of it. I just turned 46 this past Sept 12. Ever since Feb of this year, I have been bleeding heavier than the norm nonstop.
Literally. I kept putting it off for a couple months thinking it was going to stop. I finally made an appt In April, they did a transvaginal ultrasounds ,and seen a few good size fibroids, a couple polyps and a super abnormally thick lining. A Biopsy was done and she removed 3 polyps. While in there, my doctor shaved down dome of the thickness of my uterine lining. My biopsy came back abnormal cells but she said the pathology said it was very different and they've never seen anything of the like before. Let's place you on Depo Provera,& let's see you in a year. Um, I was scared of those abnormal cells... I did not want to wait a year especially since uterine and colon cancer runs through my moms side heavily. That worked for 3 weeks. Then heavy bleeding again.
SO, I saw a 2nd opinion. He did a exam and did a biopsy and the cells around my cervix and uterus came back precancerous cells. All my heavy bleeding was making me very tired and anemic. My number were between 7 & 8. He also believes my severe cramping comes from endometriosis and he will be removing any of that that he sees once he is inside.
It was in my best benefit to have the hysterectomy. He said it should come out and I would not have to bleed anymore and worry about those abnormal precancerous cells. I forgot to mention he mentioned about a slight abnormal bulge just behind my cervix and was thinking bladder prolapse. I may need a sling. This is why he wishes to be thorough and inspect the inside of my bladder (cystocopy) & biopsy while I am in the OR. So okay... cool. Let's do this!
Due to Covid, it is mandatory all patients get a covid test 3 days prior any procedure that require hospital stay. I kinda think I am FAR more nervous about getting the Covid test than the actual surgery. I know, I am weird. I have a sensitive nose and i have seen videos where they shove it so far up the nose and it looks so uncomfortable and painful. (ugh) My Covid test is Monday the 5th. I hope I can get thru this part.
The other part that concerns me is PRE OP bowel prep. I have to do 2 enemas and I have never done them before. I would much prefer to drink the magnesium citrate stuff but they prefer me to do the fleet enemas. I wonder if it's painful. I am really an exit only kinda gal if you know what I mean lol lol lol
I am as mentally prepared a I can be I think. I have bought all my post op supplies I think I will need and even have a pillow for the car ride home for my tummy. From stool softeners to prune juice & GasX
I hope I don't have any tremendous gas pain afterwards. I plan to be up and walking doing laps around the house as soon as I can but yet, without overdoing it.
I hope that all my other fellow Pre Op hystersisters will do well and have a outstanding recovery. I wish you all well. You got this , you can do it! We are all one step closer to the road to recovery. Sorry so long

Hi pookett,
So glad you got a second opinion! You have a lot going on inside, but it sounds like your surgeon is on top of things.
The post-op gas is no fun. Here are some additional tips:- Walk as you feel able each hour you’re awake
- Drink lots of water
- Peppermint tea
- Gas X
- Stool softners
- If the gas settles in your shoulders/neck, wet a towel and warm in the microwave. Moist heat draws the gas out.

Sending hugs for a safe surgery & uneventful recovery!

Hello Sisters!
My hysterectomy via da Vinci Robot is Thursday, 10/8 for FIGO grade 1 endometrial cancer. I have had a roller coaster of emotions since I was dx'd. Thursday will be the first surgery I've had as an adult. I had a few as a child and it traumatized me considerably, to where I am now terrified of anesthesia. So I am nervous as hell, but I'm praying for inner peace. A good friend of mine had her dVH on 9/24 and she is doing FANTASTICALLY for the same exact dx that I have.
I am ready for the healing part of this. I have my wedge pillows, gasX, plum juice, mesh underwear and even bought the pillow from the hyterstore. All I have to do is be brave and get through the surgery. I have had an indescribable fear of having surgery and I pray that once it's done and I wake up, that my phobia will finally be gone. My GynOnc surgeon will be removing my tubes, uterus, and cervix; keeping my ovaries, if they look normal, as I'm only 43. He'll also do a sentinel bx of my lymph nodes as customary to make sure my cancer hasn't spread. I hope that surgery will be as I remembered it, and how others have stated, one second you're awake, then asleep, and the next second awake again. I'm so scared I won't wake up.
Good luck to my other sisters having surgery this week. I'll pray for a fantastic outcome for you and fast healing. Much love and hugs.

Hi Esann,
I haven't heard anyone's experience with the CBD oil before surgery... please check in with us as you recover and tell us how that's going!
I was told I needed 6 weeks off work, but in the end I was off for 8 weeks. I had a TVH (no incisions) and worked a desk job. We are all very different, so it's hard to say how each of us will recover. I have seen ladies here with abdominal incisions who return to work in 2 weeks. Something to consider: It's easier to tell your employer you'll be off 6 weeks but return in 4 weeks, than the other way around. Bottom line is this recovery is all about YOU; take all the time you need to heal.

Hi! I have had CBD oil experience but not during the last month or so. I have a bad lower back and use it for that and it does seem to really help. I am not allowed to take any meds, pain pills or even vitamins from here on out until after my surgery.
Ha I would much rather drink the magnesium nitrate over the enema any day but maybe it won't be as bad as I think it will be.
I am fortunate to not have to need to put in for time off from work as I work from home. If I did have to go to work outside of the home, I would most likely put in for the entire 4-6 weeks off and allow my body time to heal.
I wish you a easy recovery and lots of healing.

Hi Mfulmer,
You're not alone in feeling unsure about the vaginal cuff situation! Mine healed very well with no issues, however It took me a year or so to completely trust it and feel confident that it wouldn't tear.
If you particularly wish to keep your cervix, this is something that can be discussed with your surgeon. The cervix used to be routinely removed with hysterectomies, but this is no longer the case. Some women feel strongly about retaining their cervix. There are "drawbacks" to both keeping & removing it, so it's a balance between how you feel about it along with input from your surgeon regarding what is best for your health long term.

Hi all,
I'm impressed at how prepared you all are. I'm going in at 9:30am tomorrow (gasp) for an emergency abdominal radical hysterectomy (everything - uterus, tubes, ovaries, cervix, lymph nodes and some ancillary tissue), cancer suspected. I did clean my room, wash my sheets, etc, but haven't had time to prep for anything else really. Couldn't order the tummy binder or anything. Ug! My doctor doesn't require any bowel prep which freaked me out a little reading all these posts, but I did some research and I guess not all doctors require it. I'm pretty much terrified that 1. It's really cancer because the diagnosis isn't good and 2. That the hospital stay is going to suck. My mom died of a 2 year battle with a hospital-acquired infection for a routine surgery so yeah, I'm scared. So tomorrow at this time, I'll know about the cancer at least. Cross your fingers for me. PS the COVID test was a breeze for those who are worried about it!

Hi lleggatt77,
Only someone who has been diagnosed with cancer can truly know how terrifying it is. I will never forget how I felt as I awaited biopsy results, bone scans, MRI, surgery, etc. My best advice is to lean on your people. Every time someone offers to help, take it. Even if all you need is someone to go for a walk with.
While you're in pre-op, your anesthesiologist will come to see you & ask you questions. Tell him all your concerns, whether it's fear of not waking up or concerns of feeling sick in Recovery. He will be beside you all through your surgery & his focus will be on you.
Talking to the Anesthesiologist
Sending hugs & prayers that your lymph nodes are clear and you won't need any further treatment.

Re: Pre-Op Hysterectomy: Open House Chat Thread - Today Oct 04, 2020
Sugar,
Thank you for your kind response. I'm not too worried they will find more cancer than what is suspected. The low grade and great transvag scan (which showed nothing abnormal and a very thin uterus and normal ovaries) all point to this being caught super early. I had atypical glandular cells in my routine pap smear exam. My biggest fear is the anesthesia. I will definitely take your advice and talk to the doc and try to have hin alleviate some of my fear.
Sometimes I think this is all a terrible dream and I'll wake up and find it was all in my head. But I know its not. I have read extensively on here and watched a ton of procedures on Youtube and watched vlogs from other ladies who have had hysterectomies. It helps me to know as much as possible. I just can't wait until this surgery part if over.

Hi hmg2525,
You're correct, many surgeons do not require any type of bowel prep for hysterectomy, I was one of the lucky ones who didn't need to do anything.
I am sending you hugs & prayers, I know how stressful and terrifying it can be waiting for cancer test results. Praying that no cancer is found... or if it is, that the surgery is curative & no further treatment needed! Please check in with us post op to let us know!

I find the waiting before surgery is the hardest part! I felt such relief when I woke up in Recovery and it was behind me.
