well differentiated

My gynecologist said that my cancer cells are well differentiated. Does anyone know why this is a good thing. I've looked at various web pages and the explanations are sort of vague.

A well-differentiated cell is a cell that more closely resembles a normal cell. If it's well-differentiated, it means that it's had the opportunity to mature and develop important characteristics that determine the "job" of that particular cell (ie an endometrial cell or a liver cell). These cells do not multiply as rapidly and tend to be more organized. It tends to be less aggressive than a poorly-differentiated cell. When a cell is poorly-differentiated, it's very immature and not like the normal cells that are within that organ. They tend to grow rapidly and spread quickly. The lower the number, the more well-differentiated is the cell. Which is good news.

Perhaps this site will help (or not--it can be confusing to read about this):

Just remember--the lower the number, generally the better your situation (and that applies to stage and grade both).
