an important warning about infection

Hi ladies
I had an LAVH on May6, Today is the first day I am able to talk about it. Everything went as expected for the surgery, felt pretty good on day three and went home. I was on vicidin and slept ands rested alot. No appetite, and a little diarrhea (I was drinking prune juice and taking stool softeners not to become constipated. The next night I woke up sweaty and hot ,notfeeling so great, I thouhgt maybe I was having ahot flash (even though I still had my ovaries.) Well my DH took my temp and it was 99.5 , notso bad i thought, I went back to sleep. WhenI wokeup it was100.2. The doc said call ifover100so we did, wehad to drive 45min. backup to the hospital, she did a ultrasound an d saw a small pool forming put me on oral antibiotics and sent me back home on thaT 45 min bumpy ride. By know I am feeling really weak and just crummy, went to bed had bad night fever jumping from 99-100 (not so high i thought) but man I felt funny and sooo weak. We call the dr drove back up ( me laying in the back seat hoping I wasn't dying) I was not really in any pain just weak and spacey. Well they put me back in the hopspital did an cat scan, the little pool of infection was now large. I had surgery with-in 3 hours. I stayed in the hopsital for 3 days more being pumped with antibiotics 24-7. I feelbetter know, lost 16 pds( thats theonly goodpart) still have little appetite but feel much better. Sorry this is so long but I want you all to know how important it is to take you temp, and call if you don't feel right. I had the best dr, and was at a good hosp. I never thought it would happen to me,soplease listento your body.I could hav died if I hadn't. Thanks for reading

an important warning about infection

Thank you for sharing that with us.Cathy. It is so important to take seriously the symptoms and indications our body gives us that something is wrong. I am so glad your DH was alert and watchful through this scary time you experienced.

Very happy to hear you are doing better, too.

Hi Cathy,

I just wanted to also say so that I'm so happy for you that you are on the mend. It must have been frightening to go through all of that!

Like Shirl, thanks for posting your warning and words of caution.

Best wishes and s

TO CATHYG

Cathy,
I have been posting since your surgery to see if you were okay.
Thank God, your doing better.

I was pretty scared cause I am having the same surgery as you on June 17th. When you can, would you please let me know how your surgery went. Thanks, I am pretty scared too.

i second that emotion

Cathy is SOOOOOOO right about this one! I had the same thing after my lap. gall bladder removal. I got to 101.8 and climbing and said, THIS AIN'T RIGHT! It was 2 weeks post op, and the surgeon's office said "Oh, it couldn't be related to your operation" and sent me to my GP. They did a blood draw and my WBC was over 12,000.

I was back in the hospital within 3 hours and spent 4 nights and 4.5 days being pumped full of drugs! It was the best infection I've ever had-- the CT scan led them to my messed up ovary and uterus and to Hystersisters!

So, any temperature, report it right away!

an important warning about infection

I too am concerned about the low grade fever I have been running since surgery on 5-13. Called dr. last friday and he said just take tylenol. All weekend I suffered through sweats and chills insominia and general foggy feeling even though fever never got higher than 99.7. Called dr again today and he prescribed an antibiotic. Dr. said to give antibiotic couple of days to work but I am still worried I'm not feeling as good as I should. I had a TAH and Burch. So glad I read your post. I will keep a close watch on my fever.

Excellent point, Chris. Ladies, don't let anyone tell you that your fever "can't be related to your surgery". Infection is a relatively common complication of surgery, even with good doctors and hospitals. A surgeon once tried to blow me off with "MY patients NEVER get infections, it must be something else." I insisted on being seen, and low and behold was an infection caused by his surgery. Incidentally, I did not have a fever, and you can get an infection without fever. So , listen to your bodies- if you think something's wrong, you are probably right!
