Bowel Movement

Had my surgery on Jan 16th. I left hospital on Wednesday night and still can't have bowel movement. I have tried Coffee, chocolate, mini wheats, and still nothing. I am getting ready to try caffeine tea.

Any suggestions. Good thing I didn't have to wait until I left the hospital I would still be there. LOL

Re: Bowel Movement

Colace with a big glass of water, every night for the next month! I use the generic version from W'mart, works like a charm without being an irritant like other "helpers" can be.

Re: Bowel Movement

Wow, that is surprising! Are you drinking lots of water? The way Colace works is by drawing in water from the intestinal walls to soften and ease passing of stool. You should ask your doctor about temporarily adding a bulking agent like Miralax to help get things moving. Foods that can help are apple juice and fiber rich foods like warm oatmeal & sweet potatoes. Avoid binding foods like rice, bananas, soy and dairy. A good probiotic will also help and of course the ever boring but still important "lots of water".

Re: Bowel Movement

Colace twice a day, fruit juice, lots of water, and Activia yogurt has worked pretty well for me. Morning coffee helps too. But. I had to take a dose of Miralax on day 4 to get everything started for the first time. Good luck!

Re: Bowel Movement

I'm on day 4 and have still not had any pooing. Im taking stool softeners, milk of magnesia, lots of water, and high fiber foods with no result. Lots of gas and gurgling. It's nice to hear that I'm not alone. Next time I'm "waiting" on the toilet I will think of my fellow hystersister. lol

Re: Bowel Movement

Mine finally moved last night! Keep drinking lots of water...i drank and drank but ended up not needing the stool softeners. my surgery was Tues so it was day 4; i didn't really eat any real food until day 2.5..that may make a difference too.

Re: Bowel Movement

I'm also not "going" normal. I've taken a laxative (movicol) for three days to "unblock" things (sorry if I'm gross). Now I've stopped it, because I'm afraid to take it for too long.

And "going" was difficult, so, I've hurted myself (anus)... it hurts.

I drink a lot of water and I eat fibers, but so it is.

Hugs and a good healing to all!!!

Re: Bowel Movement

Walking helped me!! I was in so much pain I called the Dr and was told water, stool softener, and walk, walk, walk.
