What Is Checked For At Pre-Op?

I am wondering what health tests are preformed at the pre-op appointment. I know it must vary some from surgeon to surgeon but can y'all give me a general idea? Thanks!

Re: What Is Checked For At Pre-Op?

They will pull blood to check your blood type, your electrolytes, and should run a cbc (complete blood count) and cmp (complete metabolic panel) to make sure there are no infections, etc. They need to know if you have anything going on as far as an infection or anemia to avoid possible complications.

You will have a chest x-ray and possibly an electrocardiogram to make sure that your heart looks okay.

Re: What Is Checked For At Pre-Op?

During my pre-op at the hospital, I pre-registered, then I talked to a nurse that told me the procedures for surgery day. She asked me some health questions, then had me watch a video about a husband and wife and her making the decision to have a hysterectomy. (didn't quite get the point of that) Then I went to the lab to have blood drawn. Not sure what they check.
I then went to the gyn's office and we talked about the surgery. I did this 2 days before.
Wishing you an easy surgery and a quick recovery. Take the time you need afterwards to heal.

Re: What Is Checked For At Pre-Op?

Look above the forum, to the left, you can read the 'Hysterectomy checkpoint'; to the right, you can request for (or download it online) the Free Booklet to get an idea.

I've had so many surgeries before I can't really remember the particulars on the presurgical procedure. I think the nurse talked to me first and then the surgeon and assistant surgeon talked to me. They were very young and very courteous - because they had to postpone my surgery. But I told them to go ahead complete the presurgical procedures and it turned out to be just a bounch of paperwork such as signing the insurance forms and consent forms. The assistant surgeon went over the steps involved - I'd learned most of it from this site already, so it did not take long.

They probably did some blood work and I think they explained the bowel preparation before the surgery. There's a detailed list on the things I needed to do before the surgery. Basically just to empty the bowels by taking laxatives...

Re: What Is Checked For At Pre-Op?

I registered at the hospital. During this time I had blood taken and visited with an "Educational Nurse" who told me what to expect. She was very helpful.

Re: What Is Checked For At Pre-Op?

At the dr office preop it was just me asking questions and the dr reaffirming our decision on what was coming out.
I preregistered at the hospital on the phone and also talked to anesthesia on the phone. It took about 20 minutes each and the questions were very detailed. They also asked if I had any questions and asked what I understood was being done.
I went to a clinic for the bloodwork and it was just a couple vials for typing and a couple other things. That's all I had. Of course, I called the dr's office daily with questions. All were answered without making me feel like I was a pest. Don't be afraid to ask.

Re: What Is Checked For At Pre-Op?

My pre-op appointment was just me and my Dr discussing what was staying and what was going and me asking 4 pages of questions that I had come up with. He was great and answered all of them and we even joked about a few of them. But he also sent me to my family doctor who did a bunch of blood work for him since I don't see him that often and an EKG. He said that he was sending all of what he took to both my GYN and to the surgery center where I will have my surgery. I also spoke with a nurse on the phone who asked me a ton of questions and told me that when I come in for me pre-admission testing that I would speak to the anesthesiologist then because I have issues with anesthesia. The blood work from my family Dr came back fine and my EKG was normal. So far so good. Starting to get a little more nervous as the last week before the big day but that's to be expected.

Good luck with your surgery.... and wishing you a speedy recovery!
