Upcoming hysterectomy 3/2: Nervous Nellie
I am having a total hysterectomy on Wednesday. I am so nervous about waiting for the pathology, even though my doctor says there is virtually no chance of cancer. My husband is renovating the bathroom this week too! That leaves my teenage daughter to care for me, which I guess is okay. I had a c-section with my son, do I'm guessing it's comparable pain. I have a friend who wants to go out tomorrow afternoon, but I just want to stay at home or in bed and just try to be calm. Does anyone else feel like that. She has never had surgery before, so she doesn't understand. I'm also trying to stay healthy. I have been drinking gallons of airborne and emergency-c. I believe they are keeping me overnight, but then it's back home. Did the rest of you get weeks of bed rest? Thanks for your input and for those of you who are with me this month, my prayers are with you.

Re: Nervous Nellie
Hi Just E -
I cannot give any input on the difference between a c-section and a TAH. Do keep in mind that you are removing an organ with a TAH, but are not doing that with a c-section. Here is some information on Abdominal Hysterectomy vs. C-Section.
It is okay to stay home and cocoon the day before surgery. That is what I did - I was in no mood to go out. I stayed home from work and went out to the grocery store for last minute items in the AM, and stayed home after that. DH came home early from work that day as well to be with me.
Be careful with taking OTC meds, vitamins and herbs without your doctors okay. You really should get their okay before you do any of this. If they do not know about this, please call them and let them know what you have been drinking and how much.
Recovery is different for everyone. I was in the hospital for 3 1/2 days. I then went home. I was not bed ridden, but rested much. I was very, very EXHAUSTED. I did lots of walking - brief but frequent walks. These help you heal. I was able to do minor items around the house, but needed help with cooking, cleaning, dishes, laundry, shopping, driving, etc. I returned to work to a moderate stress desk job after 3 weeks, but could only handle part time work for another 4 weeks. After that I returned to work full time, but no OT. It took months to rebuild my stamina to pre-op levels.
Good luck with your surgery. We will be waiting for you on the other side.
