Discharge Instructions Questionable
My TLH, left (maybe both) oophorectomy, cystoscope w/hydrodistention is scheduled for 10/31. I received my discharge papers in the mail today. It says I will have more discomfort than pain and can't lift heavy things for 72 hours. It says to physically do what I like and can tolerate. And intercourse ok once vaginal discharge has stopped. Oh, return to work 3 days after. I'm completely baffled by this! Can those who have been through this kind of surgery tell me if this sounds right.

Re: Discharge Instructions Questionable
That sounds overly optimistic to me.
I had a TAH BSO, and my restrictions were:
-no sexual intercourse for 6 weeks.
-no lifting of anything heavier than 10 lbs for six weeks.
-no driving for 2 to 3 weeks, with the ability to drive determined by being able to perform an emergency move (brake hard, turn hard, etc.)
Other activities were "as tolerated" but I could not "tolerate" much for a while and had to take things very slow. I took 3 weeks off work from a desk job. I then returned only part time for 4 more weeks, and that was very tough. I also needed help around the house and shopping for several weeks.

no lifting more than 10 lbs for six weeks. driving 2 weeks. not vacuming washing floors and need to use railings when walking up and down stairs. follow your body it knows your true limitations.

Re: Discharge Instructions Questionable
Hi, I had a TLH. Instructions given to me were: no driving for 2 weeks, no sex (or anything placed into vagina) for 6 weeks, no heavy lifting until 3 months. Was allowed back to work at 4 weeks. I've recovered really well but I'm still tired earlier in the day than I used to be and am usually in bed by 8pm.

Re: Discharge Instructions Questionable
Our doctors must be friends. My discharge instructions were also overly optimistic. Having had a TVH and being 72 hours out I'm telling you you won't feel like returning to work. My doctors instructions were for 2 weeks minimum out- (and his is the most optimistic I have heard so far) no sex for 6 weeks. He did say I could lift 50 lbs but after just doing dishes and folding clothes last night I'm here to say- not advisable. I'm no where NEAR ready to lift anything close to 50 lbs. He did say I could tub bathe which don't know my stance on that as the moist heat helped the gas discomfort (see later) but also poses infection risks if the tub isn't properly disinfected between bathing.
As for the discomfort vs pain... I would agree with that statement once you are awake and moving. At first you could have pain... (I know I did.) Afterwards its more the gas discomfort that you experience. I have tried gas x which helped some, baking soda water (recommended by hubby) which helped some, heating pads and I did take a warm bath which has seemed to help as well.
Good luck and listen to your body... it will be your key as to what is right and what is wrong.

Re: Discharge Instructions Questionable
That does sound overly optimistic..... make sure your options are open to stay home from work longer than originally advised as I'd say no way to that initial direction...

Re: Discharge Instructions Questionable
I had DaVinci and was realesed to drive at 2 days post op, and lifting of up to 15LBS right away was allowed. I was kept off work for 12 weeks, just because I had the time, and it was allowed at my job

Re: Discharge Instructions Questionable
Thank you all for your replies. I was thinking the Doc was optimistic but also thought I was being nervous. I'm more anxious about the recovery than the surgery.
Thankfully, I am a stay at home mom so my job isn't In jeapordy. My DH & kids (19, 17, & 6) are already altering their schedules so I'm not alone for the first two weeks. I do homeschool so that will be on hold for at least a couple of weeks.

Re: Discharge Instructions Questionable
As for the homeschool the older two could help mentor the younger one and assign homework so they don't get too far behind... you might be surprised. Kids rise to the occasion a lot of times especially if you put the expectations ahead of them.
