Upcoming hysterectomy 5/5: showers after surgery

This is one of the things I both dread and look forward to after each surgery I've had. I want desperately to be clean, but don't usually have the endurance to deal with it for days. I expect staples, so how soon would I be able to shower?

Re: showers

I have had abdominal surgery in the past with staples. I was able to shower at the hospital by the 3rd day. Just had to take it really slow. I did not scrub the incision, just let the soapy water run over it. Then made sure I rinsed well and delicately pat dry.

Re: showers

Hi Curlyred128 -

I had a TAH BSO with 6-inch vertical incision sealed with surgical glue. I was allowed to shower two days after my surgery. I sat in a shower chair, and they said to be gentle with the incision and to pat it dry.

Upcoming hysterectomy 5/5: showers after surgery

I had steristrips covered with tegaderm (a water proof, breathable plastic, kinda a tape) and I showered the morning after they took out my catheter but I could have showered that day had I not been too dizzy to get up.

Re: showers

Sounds like it comes down to how much energy I have. I've never managed a shower in the hospital, but I always feel so icky by the time I get home. Maybe I'll make it a priority. At least I'll be in the right place for same major help if something goes wrong.

I was allowed to shower the next morning, which I did. It felt great!

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy: showers after surgery

My incision was closed with staples. I had a shower and washed my hair as soon as I got home from the hospital three days after surgery. Ahhhhhh!!!!!!! The nurse told me to soap the area *above* the incision and let the soapy water run down over it. Let clear water run down over it to rinse. *Pat* dry, don't rub.

I got through the shower, had a bite to eat and that was it for me for the day. I went to bed and fell asleep! This was about 6-7 PM.
