Your best advice for pre-op nerves? (Update)

Hi everyone. My LAVH is scheduled for Friday, and I am a wreck. Everything I have read on this site says that these pre-op days are the worst of it, so that is comforting. What is your best advice for getting through these days leading up to surgery?

Thank you!

Re: Your best advice for pre-op nerves?

Hi!! I guess I would suggest just keeping yourself busy! Get everything you want to get done because it will be a while before you can do those things again! Maybe have a Small "Goodbye" to your uterus dinner with family and friends! Pick up some good books to read during your recovery!! Friday will be here before you know it!! Good luck with your surgery and see you on the other side!! Hugs xoxox Kim

Re: Your best advice for pre-op nerves?

I honestly didn't do that much prep, and now seeing how my house is insanely disorganized and a little (ok a LOT) messy, I kinda think it would have been pointless LOL. Definitely keep yourself busy. I let my husband spoil me a little. He picked up some take out from a resturant we've been wanting to try, but can't because we have 3 young, somewhat wild wee ones. We spent a lot of time together watching movies, and doing fun things since I would be down for a while after surgery.

My best advice looking back to my pre-op days, is to just enjoy your days as best you can, and have fun Of course you can still be a little spoiled post op, but pre-op you aren't on any restirctions.

Re: Your best advice for pre-op nerves?

For me, the pre-op nerves were awful. I wasn't sleeping, my mind raced, it was NOT FUN. So I took the advice of the ladies on this site by
1. prepping my house. I super cleaned knowing that my DH who had never vacuumed in out 1.5 years of marriage would be in charge. SO GLAD I did! The house stayed pretty presentable for about three weeks.
2. Stocked up the freezer and pantry. I picked up a lot of my favorite foods and made sure the freezer was full of leftovers to toss in the microwave.
3. Had several "date" nights. I knew it would be a LONG time till that would happen again so we kept quite...busy.
4. Shopped for comfy clothes. I have LIVED in workout shorts. They are still the most comfy thing to wear in the evenings when the belly swells.
5. Spent lots of time with family and friends. I needed to get out of my own head and surrounding myself with people and not sitting in my anxiety alone was a lifesaver.
6. Mani-pedi the day before....and it was hours before the bowel prep had to start. Having soft pretty painted hands and feet helped in those first few days after surgery.
6. Most of all, I prayed. I asked people to pray. And it worked. The morning of the surgery I was ready. I woke up with peace about the entire thing.

All the very best to you! I promise afterwards you will look back and wonder why you got yourself so worked up.

Knitting is my go-to for nerves. Cleaning also helps.

Keeping busy and having a positive outlook also does wonders.

Laying here in hospital post op-you'll be fine!

Ladies, I was absolutely terrified before my LAVH. Seriously, I was a total basket case with fear. Now, 12 hours after surgery I am lying in my hospital bed waiting for my chocolate ice cream to thaw a bit and Vicodin to kick in and watching Monk. The pain is really not bad at all. When you read that pre-op anxiety is worse than the surgery, that is 100% true. You'll be just fine!
