to keep or not to keep

My Dr. Says he's leaving my ovaries, but some people have said they either had theirs removed during hysterectomy or had to have them removed some time after hysterectomy like years later). I'm trying to decide if I should ask about removing them during this surgery. Would insurance pay for another surgery if they had to be removed later? Any experiences with this out there?

Re: to keep or not to keep

If your ovaries are healthy, and you don't have any specific cancer concerns, why remove them? The estrogen they produce is vital to bone, heart, mental, and sexual health. Hormone replacement is not easy for a lot of women and may require a lot of trial and error, and even when it's well - adjusted, it's not as good as what an ovary can do. I wish I could have saved an ovary. Surgical menopause is more difficult thannatural menopause. Yes, some women do have to have a later surgery to have an ovary removed, but that is not the case for the majority. In my opinion, it's not worth removing them for convenience on the speculation that something may go wrong down the line. It may never happen. There are plenty of articles and resources to consult on this site for more info.

Re: to keep or not to keep

I am keeping mine. I am only 37 and I have so many concerns with just losing my uterus and cervix. So losing my ovaries would be bad Juju. Good luck to you.
