Lightbulb - 3 Tips Before You Go 3 Tips Before You Go

I am home recovering from LAVH/BSO, and here are three things I think everyone should know before they go for their big day:

1. Bring your own pillow. The hospital pillows were hard and awful! I know I would have been more comfortable with my own.

2. Ask the nurse for a whole pack of the maternity underwear. They are the gauzy, stretchy, lightweight undies you may be remember if you’ve given birth. Get some for yourself to use at home. The nurse didn’t offer them to me, so I had to ask, but she said “Oh of course!” and immediately hooked me up. My friend gave me this advice, and they’re so comfy to wear in the days post surgery.

3. Take your pain meds pre-emptively. My doctor was very clear about this. She said, “In the first few days, make sure you take your pain medicine on schedule, even if you’re not feeling pain at that moment. It’s much better to keep it at bay than to fight it off after it hits. The ibuprofen helps keep swelling down to promote healing.” Because of her advice, my pain has been minimal. I don’t want to know what it would be like if I waited to take my meds!

Best wishes to you on your journey!
