Surg in 1 wk - ?'s (child mentioned)
I came back from the dr today, and my surgery is scheduled for next Wed. I don't know all the symbols, but I'm having a hysterectomy, with an incision across the abdomen, with possibly removing the ovaries too. We're hoping to keep them, since I'm 34 and don't wish to go into menopause if we can help it.
I don't think it's completely hit me yet.
My biggest question is, I have an 8 month old, soon to be adopted, son. How do I do things with him? I can't carry him for 6 wks, so how do I get him out of his crib, carry him to another place, or onto the floor?? I'm home with him all day, and I don't have someone who can be at my house every day for 6 wks.
Any suggestion from those who maybe had a little one at home while recuperating?
(I really hope this is an appropriate thing to ask, and I don't mean to offend anyone by mentioning a child.)

Hi JMinFlowerMound
Congratulations on your new son! It's natural that you want to do as much as possible for him. You may want to take a look at our Post-op Resources page. If you scroll down toward the bottom, you should find an article "Recovering with Small Children." That gives some tips on how to care for little ones without lifting.
Just the other day, one of the other members here suggested having the child sleep on a mattress on the floor.
As for your surgery abbreviations, you can click on Quick Links in the purple menu bar above. One of the options is Abbreviations, which will tell you the different kinds of surgeries. Also under Quick Links, you can find Edit Your Details. You can input your surgery date there, which will allow you to sign up for our Checkpoints emails.
I'm glad you found us here. The women here are very supportive of each other and will have lots of suggestions based on what worked for them.

Re: Surg in 1 wk - ?'s (child mentioned)
I think the mattress thing sounds good. As for the carseat thing, Honestly, I had the same surgery.. I have a 4 year old(special needs) and a 9 year old. I did not drive for about 4weeks...and even then it was just to our little store in town. At about 4-5 weeks, I was able to lift a little...but probably not a 8 month old child. Your body will tell you when you have done too much... At eight months old, can he climb on the couch next to you? Maybe even putting a mattress next to the couch so he can step up on the couch....
I hope you can get some help... My husband is a trucker..and was gone after the first week...I did it all on my own...good luck...we are all here to listen if you need it!

I don't have any suggestions but wanted to congratulate you on your upcoming adoption! I have to say it is the BEST way to create a family! I have 2 sons who were both adopted and they are the light of my life.

Re: Surg in 1 wk - ?'s (child mentioned)
Thank you!! We have a 3 yr old daughter that we adopted from the foster care system, our 8 month old son we hope to finalize next year and a 7 yr old daughter that was just placed with us for adoption. So we are crazy busy, but loving it! It's truly the best thing if we're not able to have bio kiddos.
Thanks again and congrats on your 2 sons as well!!
