Immediate post-op questions?

I'm hoping that this isn't unusual, but my doc is acting as if it's normal to not be sure what he's going to find during my TAH until he gets in there. We're pretty sure I have a fairly large (3 month pregnancy) fibroid.

He's planning on taking the cervix & leaving the ovaries.

My question is -- when he comes out after the operation to tell my husband how everything went -- that may be my only chance to get the details of how it went (I'm in on 12/20, and he's off on holiday vacation the next day!).

WHAT QUESTIONS do I want my DH to ask the doc? Be aware, he's not a "female health oriented" male.

I'm thinking:
1. Did you find anything that you had to deal with other than the fibroid?
2. Are both ovaries left?
3. Did her bladder & bowel come out of the operation okay?
4. Since her bleeding has always been EXTREMELY light, how will she know if she's bleeding too much?
5. Any exercises she can/should do to aid recovery?
6. Any transfusion needed?

But I know there's more I should know -- any suggestions?

You seem to have it all in order. You may also want to ask about your post op pain options and make sure who you need to call if you have questions. My surgery was schedule for 12/27 but my is going to NYC for the holidays and his wife (who assist him) didn't want to leave me in the hands of anyone else. Wasn't that thoughtful? The only bad thing is, they resceduled it for 1/03/02 which means a whole new deductible!

Any way, just take the pain meds, drink the fluids, walk, and walk some more. Hope you do just fine. I'll be praying for you.

Immediate post-op questions?

"When should she come in for her first post-op check up?"
"Are there stitches/staples? When do they come out?"
"What activities are restricted, and for how long?" (especially if you think your DH might be likely to expect you to be doing the laundry the next week or something).
"Any restrictions on diet?"

Tell you DH to take notes. Whenever a doctor has thrown a whole bunch of info at me at once I've promptly forgotten most of it.

And yes, it is normal to not be sure of what to expect "until we get in there". I was complaining to my current (wonderful) gyn about how I wished my previous (useless) gyn had at least done an ultrasound several years ago, which might have found my fibroids. He told me not to be *too* hard on her, since ultrasounds, exams, and other tests very often miss fibroids anyway. I've also heard lots of stories here from women who've gone in for one fibroid, but the doc found 5, or found adenomyosis instead. But once they do have a good look around, it's easy to do whateve is needed to take care of what they find. So don't worry, your doctor isn't a slacker.

Immediate post-op questions?

My MD went over things with my DH and DD right after my surgery, and they told me what he had said (I was kind of fuzzy, but remembered some of it). When the MD came in to see me the next morning, he told me everything he had told DH and DD, and then some more things. I was in for 2 nights, and the day he discharged me, he went over post-op instructions with me and my DH, so there was no confusion there.

My MD also found more things when he actually got in there - hyst was for very heavy bleeding, and he knew I had a fibroid after ultrasound. He also found endometriosis and adenomyosis, so I don't think that is unusual at all.

Best of luck to you.

Immediate post-op questions?

Hi Martha,
I will also be having my surgery on 12/20. My Doctor will also be taking a couple of days off. He tried to get me to postpone so he could watch after me in the hospital instead of one of his associates. I told him no way. I'm keeping my date. Making a list for the hubby is a great idea. I also bought a disposable camera. I guess after all the trouble I've had I want pictures of the culprit. My Doctor said he would leave ovaries if possible. From an ultrasound they can see some things but not all. They told me the dimensions of three of my fibroids but said the other ones were overshadowed by the larger ones. I guess we will both have to wait and see what else they find inside us. I wish you all the luck in the world. heres to a speedy recovery.
God Bless
