I have had both types of ultrasound and you can drink before it. With the abdominal ultrasound they made me drink lots of water because it helps them to see (not sure why lol) bye for now from shiona

ultrasound today, Can I drink something before?

Hi,

Before my internal ultra sound 1 1/2 hours before, I had to drink 32 ounces of water. After one hour, they took me early, they said my bladder was only half full and they couldn't do the test. I then drank another 32 ounces on the spot. Twenty minutes later she was able to do the external ultrasound, I emptied (thank God by then, I was bursting ) and she performed the internal. I am surprised that they didn 't tell you what or what not to do. I would call up the place where you are having it done, to make sure You are ready when They are.

Good Luck, I worried for nothing! It was an easy appointment, once my bladder cooperated!

I had an abdominal ultrasound followed by a pelvic ultrasound - I was to come in with nothing to drink for the abdominal and then after that I drank a lot and waited in the waiting room for way too long until my bladder was full for the pelvic. Good Luck. Call the Doctors office before you drink anything.

Drink lots of water. Lots. For an abdominal US your bladder has to FULL. A full bladder helps push things around so that your ovaries can be visualized.

If your orders say something like 'pelvic survey' you can probably expect both the abdominal and vaginal. The tech will do the full bladder transabdominal US first.

Then this wonderful person will let you go to the bathroom to empty your bladder. Heaven. AHHHH.

Then its back to the table for a transvaginal. Whenever I have had these done, the tech has me insert the transducer into my vagina and then she takes over.

Good luck!

I'm surprised they didn't tell you. Call them first. I had to drink before having both addominal and trans vaginal ultrasounds. They tell you to drink huge amounts of water, but one doctor told me coffee should fill the bladder up. I had one good size mug and did not need water! The tech took a quick look to see if my bladder was full enough and it was!

I wish I had known that about coffee before I drank all that h2o!!! I definitely agree with everyone and call. I have always had to drink lots of h2o before and than after the external us I could empty my bladder and then they did the internal one. Good luck to you.
