Concerns about working out after surgery
Hi there!
So all of this is so new to me as I just determined yesterday with my doctor that I will have a partial hysterectomy. It may seem silly but one of my biggest concerns is time off the tennis court and time off from working out.
Tennis is my career. I play as well as teach 3-4 days a week. I also work out at the gym 3-4 days a week. I am terrified of not being able to be active. 4-8 weeks off the court is major for me. I know everyone heals differently and I can only pray to have a speedy recovery.
Does anyone have any experience with working out after surgery? Any advice or thoughts to calm my nerves are much appreciated....but want to hear your honest truths, too!

Your job is so active and stressful on your abdominal muscles I think you are wise to take extra time. I have a desk job and was exhausted when I went back after 6 weeks.
The good things that will help you recover faster are your physical fitness and that you are having a partial hysterectomy. You won't have a vaginal cuff that needs to heal. If you are having things done laproscopically that will help as well.
Talk to your Dr. and go slowly you only get 1 chance to heal.

Re: Concerns about working out after surgery
Before i had my 1st surgery (2 1/2 years ago) I think i overdid it, at that time i was working out every day and twice a week muy tai.
I went back too early ( although it was abdonimal surgery in my case)
Anyway, during my last complete hysterectomy , 6 weeks ago, they found i had tons of scar tissue, and from what i have been told, most of the scar tissue is made in the months following surgery and too much straining, lifting etc, makes more scar tissue that in my case stuck to my bladder, bowels etc.
it was causing me pain, so i would not advise going back to it too early, you may suffer in the long run.
i would talk to your doc before starting anything

Re: Concerns about working out after surgery
I'm only 19 days post op. I lifted weights consistently, for over 7 years so I was horrified at the thought of not being able to lift after surgery.
In all honestly, since my surgery, I'm not all that concerned. I'm just happy with being able to walk to my mailbox, shower and feed my cat. I DON'T even want to think about working out for a while.
Its hard to explain, but my body has gone through hell and my brain seems to understand so I'm not concerned or consumed with thoughts of working out ATM.
Its not as horrible as I thought it would be. When I'm ready to get back to my weight bench, my mind and body will let me know.
I'm enjoying making progress every day. I'm taking baby steps, not because I want to, but because I have to. But that's OK.
I know in the end, the months of inconvenience was all worth it. My life is free of the alien seed pod that was growing in me.
Please try not to be obsessed with working out like I was. I can't tell you when you will be able to go back to your normal activities. Only your doc and your body can tell you that.
Please do what your doc tells you. Mine has cleared me to use my 3lb dumbbells.....how embarrassing.......3lbs.
gahhh, I was benching 100lbs just 4 weeks ago.
But that's the way you have to approach this..........starting out light and SLOWLY working your way back to where you were. That's just the plain facts.
(hugs)

Re: Concerns about working out after surgery
I certainly appreciate all of your advice and feedback. I will definitely take it slow. I'd rather be off for 2 or 3 months and come back strong rather than rush back too soon and end up prolonging my recovery.
It just takes me a while to form a good habit and so the fear of being off for too long and getting used to that scares me. Also, I think there's the fear of complications and maybe never being able to be on the tennis court again. That's probably irrational thinking because I am only 36 and very healthy and strong....but you know, your mind just plays those games.
Also, because my career is in tennis...well, I don't know what else I'd do with my life if I didn't have tennis. I mean, I ultimately believe I'll be better off in the long run and maybe even perform better than I ever had. Maybe even lose more weight hopefully because with these fibroids, it's been a real bear to lose weight.
Lots and lots to consider and think about....but it's so nice to have a community of women who understand just how I am feeling. Thanks again!
