Re: 5 days til tah
I had a TAH last November. Here are a few suggestions:
Clean your house, especially your bathroom, before you go in. (You will not be doing that for a while when you get home and who wants to sit around looking at a dirty house)
Depending on your home support, stock up your house with easy to prepare foods.
Buy a belly band if the hospital does not supply one. My belly band really helped me get around by seriously limiting the pain. I got by with Motrin and a belly band.
Here is one thing I didn't plan for, dont get rid of your pads and panty liners. Expect to bleed some and have discharge for a couple of weeks. I did not expect this and had to send my husband to the store to buy pads. He was less than impressed but he was very supportive.
Get Gas-x and a stool softner. You will appreciate having these after you get home. Prepare for the gas pain. Mine started as soon as I ate something solid. Take it slow returning to solid food. My first meal was turkey, mashed potatoes, and veg (hospital food the day before Thanksgiving) BIG Mistake. I should have stayed with the Jello a little bit longer.
Buy an ice pack. I didn't need it for surgery but I found it came in handy for the hot flashes that come on hot and heavy.
Depending on where you are, get Netflix on demand (like with Wii or playstation). I watched all of the Doc Martin series.
Have someone else pick up your post op meds prior to leaving the hospital. It is not so fun to stand in the drug store waiting for your meds before going home.
Buy a grabber so you do not have to bend over to pick stuff up.
Rest as much as you can.
I hope this helps and that you have a smooth recovery. Life is better on the other side of a TAH.

kklaurel1123 said it best. The only thing I would add is earsplugs and one of those spa eyemasks. In the hospital, my roomate decided to watch TV all hours of the day and night and I wish I had one of those masks.

Re: 5 days til tah
Good luck to both of you. Try to get done as much as you can around the house before you go in. I didn't need a donut but an ice pack and heating pad was a must. The grabber stick was a real help. I didn't have much of an attention span to read right after just watched alot of mindless TV for the first 2 weeks. At four weeks just started venturing out. Went to the grocery store but only lasted about 20 minutes. One thing you can count on you will be resting alot and not much more. Good luck.
