Take one ovary?
I have the condition Mittleschermz (ovualtion pain) and I mean pain. It will drop me to my knees if I don't catch it in time with Advil. I wil be having a TVH for fibroids on 3/19 and my Dr. suggested that he could take the right ovary since the pain is greater on that side when I ovulate. But I have concerns that I would still have the pain on my left side, just not as severe. I am 36 and have a ways to go before menopause. What are the some of the risks of only have one ovary? Any info would be a great help.

Take one ovary?
Hey there,
I am having my right ovary removed for that same reason...although I've never heard a term such as that for the pain. I hardly ever get left side pain. So my gyn's going to take out the right one, he said I'll have more than enough estrogen with just the left. I, too, have concerns and worry that my left one will shut down and then I'm made to take hrt. But I'm not letting it worry me. The gyn said there is a percentage that it happens to, and if that would happen, he said there is an estrogen patch that we would look into.
I have the right side pain now for 4 days. Tonight is the worst and I can hardly type now because my prescr. pain med has finally kicked in.
Do you have to pee more when you get the pain? I do. And the last 4 days it's been hurting when I do pee and especially when I have a BM.

Take one ovary?
i never thought about it before, but I guess I do pee more when I have the pain. It also feels like I have to have a MAJOR BM when I really don't. The pain goes right through my rectum. There is no cure for Mittleschermz except to quit ovulating and remove both ovaries, but I don't want to go that drastic, not yet anyways. Too young for HRT. My pain only last for about 5-6 hours, but I would prefer to give birth than go through it. LOL How do they know if your ovary starts to shut down if they other is removed?
Thanks...

Take one ovary?
I don't know how to know if it's not working. My guess would be symptoms of menopause, heat flashes maybe. I don't know. That would be a question to ask the dr. next time. My pain has never gone to rectum, but goes into my right thigh and then till I'm done my leg and knee aches and is so tired feeling.

Take one ovary?
Hi rapidsangel & esa - I am writing as a sister who is now over 4 months post op - I had a TAH and they removed my left tube and ovary leaving my lonely little right ovary - it seems to be working OK - I am not having any different feelings than before - I actually still get really sore breasts a couple of days before my periods would be due (but no bleeding anymore ) which obviously means the hormones are still pumping through my body OK - I think you would be fine with just one ... I have to tell you I am now a totally different woman - its amazing how when you have constant pain for so long you kind of block it out but when its gone you feel SOOOO good - take care sisters and feel free to send me a private message if you wish - love Sharon xx

Take one ovary?
Hey,
I too am having Right sided pain with ovulation and also with the onset of my period. Does your pain happen with both. I hope I don't start having Left pain after sugery, that would be the pits! Your pain sounds pretty much like mine. My surgery date is the 22nd - tah-rso-rectocele repair.
good luck and take care!!

Take one ovary?
I had my left ovary removed almost 8 years ago because of a fibroid that had engulfed it. I used to have extremely severe pain when that ovary was ovulating. After having the ovary removed, the right one started doing all the work. I have never had a lot of pain in the right ovary. I did have an LAVH on 2/18 bacause of more fibroids and an enlarged uterus (4 months pregnancy size). I still have my right ovary after the hyst. My doctor believes that "If it's not broke, don't fix it". In other words, my right ovary is still working fine and had no adhesions, fibroids, systs, or other problems while in doing the hyst. So, he left it there to continue to do it's job.
Good luck to you.

Hi Rapidsangel,
I was going to keep both ovaries but the DR had to take one because of endometriosis. After all the recoperating I feel great, no problems at all with one ovary so far. My left side was removed. Love, ((((STITCHER))))

Take one ovary?
Hi
I had my left ovary out because it was destroyed with endo. I have noticed no ill effects with having only 1 ovary. I can still tell when I'm ovulating, but nothing like it was before. Most of my pain was on the left, so the ovulation is more of a sensation now than pain. PMS is very mild (and of course no "M"!!), but no other menopausal symptoms. I'm 31 and that's why I wanted to keep one ovary - didn't want to be menopausal yet, or on HRT. Good luck in whatever you decide.
Shelley
