New Wrinkle - Endometrial Biopsy results

Wow, so I just got my endometrial biopsy results, which show complex hyperplasia atypia. Wasn't expecting that! I have been bleeding non stop since November (5 months), so that is what started all this workup. I have PCOS and will be 48 this summer. Intially went to the gyn to request ablation for the bleeding, but after some discussion regarding all my symptoms, we decided to move ahead with a LAVH & BSO in early June along with cystocele repair as a bonus. So now my Gyn calls me today with the endo biopsy results and is talking about gyn-oncologists and so on. She wants to do a D&C to do further pathology and then proceed from there. So now I am totally freaked out. I have an 11 year old daughter. This worse thing ever would be if something happened to her. The second worse thing is if something happens to me and I am not there for her. So scared. I am at work right now and no one to talk to but all of you lovely ladies. Thanks.

Re: New Wrinkle - Endometrial Biopsy results

Sorry your test results are distressing. Sound though like same op ant timeframe, unless D&C shows something else? Its scary but take it one procedure at a time. It should be fine, do see the gyn onc, they are most knowledgable. Sound like you may feel better post op. I wish you well.

Re: New Wrinkle - Endometrial Biopsy results

Yes, so I guess the D&C will tell us more about what is actually going on and if there is actually any cancer. The doctor said that the type of hyperplasia cells the endo biopsy showed are the kind that do not respond to progesterone therapy. So far most of what I have been able to find talks about progesterone therapy as a treatment, so I am not sure what this means.

So after the D&C, if there is anything more worrisome, we will move up the date for the hysterectomy, but it also means I will need to have it done by another surgeon as they will need to look at nodes and who knows what else. My gyn does the basic LAVH etc, but not something more involved, so will need to see a gyn-oncologist for that and that also means having surgery 60 miles away in the big city instead of our local hospital. So now I have to wait for the D&C and those reults before I know my next steps.

Re: New Wrinkle - Endometrial Biopsy results

Hi CMT ~~

Sorry you are feeling so scared and stressed now. Sounds like you've got a good dr who is being very thorough and cares enough to send you on to a more qualified specialist. I understand you're not wanting to go to the farther away hospital because that had been mentioned to me at one point. But, you want to have the very best dr doing your surgery and one who has experience taking out the lymph nodes for checking.

I know you're feeling overwhelmed now. Try to focus on your D&C first, then you can focus on your hysterectomy. I listened to guided imagery/affirmations/relaxing music each night at bedtime and it helped to calm me down. The one I used was Successful Surgery by Belleruth Naperstek.

There's lots of helpful information on this website and so many hystersisters to share the journey with you. We'll all help you.

Re: New Wrinkle - Endometrial Biopsy results

Thanks Starry Nite! I am trying to stay positive, do the one-day-at-a-time approach, and not obsess too much (ha ha). Funny thing about having to go to the hospital in the big city, is that I actually work in one of the two hospitals I would be referred to (but in pediatrics). I am an RN, so I "know too much" in some ways, but not enough in other ways, as all this gyn stuff is not my area of expertise. I'm trying to approach this as a well-informed patient, not a medical professional.

Re: New Wrinkle - Endometrial Biopsy results

Hi cmt1962,
I know this is all scary especially when they start using the pre-cancer word, etc. I am so glad your doctor is talking about gyn/oncs as they are the experts and should be consulted if cancer is only the suspect.
You might also want to check out our CancerConcerns forum and post there with queries re complex hyperplasia with atypia and related questions as there are quite a few women there who've posted on this topic, etc. Pls be assured you will be most welcomed and the ladies there are fantastic re sharing their experiences etc.

Re: New Wrinkle - Endometrial Biopsy results

Hi there. I was also diagnosed with complex hyperplasia with atypia. It was terrifying and I just knew I was filled with cancer! It turned out that everything was contained in my uterus and they removed everything so I was very fortunate.

I hope the same happens for you. All I can tell you is to pray and hope and trust your doctor. I was also referred to a Gyn-Oncologist and he was so comforting as he had seen this so many times. He was careful not to tell me "not to worry" but reassured me that this is usually caught in the pre-cancer stage. I didn't think mine was because I had gone over 10 years with heavy bleeding and PCOS as well. It is my understanding that uterine cancer is the slowest-growing so we have that in our favor.

I wish you the best. Please keep us posted!
