Re: A job in a Male dominated Field....

I work with a bunch of engineers who work in power plants. I guess drafting is now considered a male/female job, but when we had a full office, there were 24 of us, & only one other was female. Sometimes, I get to go out & work in the power plant, which is great. I wouldn't want to work in an office full of women. I don't like the estrogen conflict.

I spent 4 1/2 years as a volunteer firefighter/EMT. I loved it, but had to quit when I moved to a city with paid firefighters. I preferred the brush fires over multi-story appartments & offices, anyway.

I am a civilian who works for the military. Testosterone city!

I often go to meetings and realize I am the only female in a room of 30 men.

Re: A job in a Male dominated Field....

I work in IT..and primarily work with men who love to tease each other ...the other day one guy got a little moody and another guy said to ignore him - obviously he was menstruating..to which I replied - hey - I don't do that anymore so if I ever seem moody its because I'm moody! We all had a good laugh.

p.s. I found all of them very compassionate and understanding before and after my surgery..

Re: A job in a Male dominated Field....

I'm there with ya! I work in wildfire management - there are more women in the upcoming generation than when I came up through the ranks, and I am more accustomed to being one of the guys than having lots of women around! Most of my colleagues are men and we get along very well...if anything they have been very protective of "their sis" when I'm not doing well and they look so relieved to see me doing well again! It's a different bond than with women friends and I feel fortunate to have both! This site is a great balance!

Re: A job in a Male dominated Field....

I started as a volunteer firefighter when I was 18 and got my EMT cert at 19, then I enlisted in the US Army Military Police Corp. Definately the testosterone ocean there. But I would not trade any of it for the world.

I'm not above tossing a box of Midol to a guy, if he's acting like a PMS'ing woman.

ha! that reminds me of when we were trying to come up with a name for our new field machining company..one of them was Precision Machine Services. We hat to turn in several names in case any were rejected.
Well, the guys were so whiny, we designed a logo for PMS with a maxi pad beneath the letters!

Re: A job in a Male dominated Field....

Retired military and now a police officer.

Still trying to figure out how soon is too soon to go back on light duty and how soon is too soon to dodge bullets and chase gang bangers over fences. Absolutely cannot show any weakness to anyone, but also cannot afford to lose my job. Unpaid leave would be a real financial hardship.
