symptoms
I am looking for others who suffer from adenomyosis. I have suffered for some years with symptoms and been to the doctor on numerous occasions. I will try to be brief and give an overview of my story. After I had my tubes tied the doctor who preformed (not my regular) told me that it would most likely increase menstural discomfort...cramping ect. So for several years following I have lived with EXTREME cramps and painful periods. I finally went to the doctor and told him I could no longer stand it. Each month my schedule becomes less predictable, bleeding gets heavier, periods get longer (sometimes 10-12 days sometimes 2 1/2 months strait) I have pain and bleeding with intercourse and just hurt all of the time.... when the doctor did the pelvic exam he said he felt a large 'mass' and sent me to the "city doctors" (we live in a rural area and if you have something major they send you on to the city) They did a pelvic sonogram and found nothing unusual. It was so discouraging that I had finally built up the courage to go through all of this just to find out that they could not see anything wrong. It has been 4-5 years since that exam, and I recently built up the courage to go back. This time I went strait to the "city" to a womens health clinic. I was determined to find an answer to what is wrong with me, I have been miserable too long. During the pelvic exam the doctor was shocked at the size of my uterus and sent me for another ultrasound. this time the ultrasound showed the presence of fibroids - but no abnormal size or placement. I sat at the computer for days feeling discouraged and came across an article on adenomyosis... finally an explanation. I had every symptom mentioned and it made sense. When I returned to the Doctor after the tests had all been run, she brought up the possibilty of aden. which was a relief to me after suffering this long with no obvious diagnosis. We have scheduled the hysterectomy for the 18th of may. I would like to hear from others who have suffered from adenomyosis and what thier symptoms were and if they had relief with surgery. It is my understanding that they cannot even make a positive diagnosis until the uterus is removed and sent to pathology.

I had a TAH 4 weeks ago today for adeno. I had all the symptoms you have. I had a ultrasound and they said my uterus was boggy and was slightly larger than it was from my last ultrasound and dx was possible adeno. Dr. said he could do a MRI to make sure but he was pretty positive so I decided to get a hyster. My path reports came back postive for adeno. I was in horrible pain for months before I had a tah, there were times I crawled because the cramping was to much. I am still recovering and have pains from recovery, but I am glad to say none of the pain I had before has returned (knock on wood). I wish you much luck and I hope your hyster helps you as much as it has helped me.

My doctor says that there is pretty good possibility that I also have adenomysis (sp?). Before I had my daughter, my periods were always miserable. I would have such bad cramps that some days I would have to lie perfectly still in bed for hours just to feel some relief from the pain. When I had to get up every hour or every 2 hours to change my pad and tampon, I would throw up and have loose stools. At least my periods were punctual, you could predict them to the day and they would come.
After I had my daughter, it was even worse. After the after pregnancy bleeding, I had my first normal period. Except it was about as unpunctual as you could get. I basically bled for three months solid. One hour would just be spotting, the next hour would be flooding. I would have mood swings that were unimaginable and would also have cramps. Thankfully, these weren't as bad as they used to be.... I was nursing my daugther at the time and for some reason this lessened their severity.
The only relief I got was with Depo Provera which stopped my periods eventually.
I don't want to stay on Depo forever bc the side effects are hard to live with. So when I went to my doc and told him the above mentioned history, he said there was a good chance that I had adeno. because I was bleeding non stop. He said that there was a good chance that scar tissue had built up in my uterine muscle and was bleeding out along with my regular period.
I don't know if the hormonal changes of pregnancy caused this or not. There is a theory that too much estrogen production can cause adeno.
You often hear of people who have endo before they are pregnant and then after they have their child, it goes away. You also hear of the opposite, you have a child and then you develop endo.
Since adenomysis is basically endometriosis of the uterus, it would be plausible to think that I developed it after being pregnant. This would explain the non stop bleeding.
My uterus was normal size when I had my Pap. So if there is adeno it didn't develop enough to make it grow larger and the Depo stopped it. The only way to know if I have adenomysis is to have a hyst and have them test for it. I don't know any other way to detect it.
Sorry this is such a long post, but I hope something I have written will help you.
Good luck.

The information is much appreciated. I have felt like I am in limbo, on good days I question if I am making the right decision - on bad days I can not imagine living like this a minute longer. The pain has become so severe that I cannot even bend enough to put my shoes on for myself most mornings and my children have to help. I am not a wimp, I have gone through three induced births without so much as a tylenol. I have always felt like I could handle discomfort fairly well, but I have thrown in the towel. There must be some quality of life... without pain. Thank you to all that reply!

I was told I had adenomyosis after a Ulrasound showed Uterus was enlarged and a Uterine Biopsy showed I definatly had it.I bled soooooooooooooooo bad.I passed huge clots and had 2-3 periods a month. They ranged from 9-11 days.I would change pads every 15-20 mintues.I would loose so much blood that I got weak from it.
You need to stop and think about the quality of life you're living right now with it.Is it something that can be put off?Or is it a now or never kind of thing?
Good luck and I pray things go GREAT for you.

I can relate to you too. After 6 years of pain and having to change pads and tampons every half hour to hour hoping that I had enough with me and passing huge blood clots I was finally diagnosed with adeno. Uterus enlarged and boggy and the pain is unbearable. Especially lately and I'm beyond exhauseted. Surgery schedule for May 25th I am soooo looking forward to no more pain and bleeding. Good luck to you.

Hello fellow ladies in waiting! This site has been wonderful to find as for all this time I felt as if I was suffering alone. I have always had horrible periods and was told it would get better after I had children. For me it only got worse. I have 3 children and had horrible unterine infections after each pregnancy. Last Oct. I developed another infection for no apparent reason. I was in the most unbelievable pain. My dr referred me onto a gyno who ended up doing an emergency surgery to remove my right ovary and fallopian tube. I think that the surgery opened the flood gates for pain. Each cycle only gets worse. I went back to my regualr doc and asked him about it- he told me that I was just one of those ladies that would always be dealing with pain. A few weeks ago I went back to the gyno that did my Oct surgery and he was so on a different tune than my reg doctor. He said that my uterus is larger than it should be and with how tender it was that he suspects the adenomyosis is the culprit. I was relieved to know it wasn't all in my head but scared to death when he told me the only way that I would feel better is to have a hysterectomy. My date is set for May 16th- they'll take everything ( cervix, uterus, my remaining ovary and fallopian tube. I am sooooo looking forward to feeling better. I wish you all luck with healing and dealing.

do you know if adeno is the same as pcos? I have been dxd with pcos and my uterine biopsy showed dub caused by unopposed estrogen. I tried the mirena iud afterI could not take depo provera and I had the same side efftects with the mirena iud in. My dd thought I was crazy and said the side effects were in my head. I have too many andogens and cystic ovaries. Do you know a web site on adeno? Thanks, Marg
