Disney Theme Parks after surgery
Help please!
I have just been scheduled for an abdominal hysterectomy on 20th September.
10 weeks later we had planned to go on our 'holiday of a lifetime' to Florida. It will be all about the theme parks; a different park each day. We live in England so this will involve a long haul flight. This will be my first visit to the states.
Will I have the stamina to enjoy the trip or should I postpone? If I postpone, for how long?
I really want to enjoy this visit, but theme parks are exhausting anyway!

Re: Disney Theme Parks after surgery
Hi midge. I am not sure how to answer this as we all heal differently. I am only 9 days out and had a minor set back with infection. I would talk to your Dr and find out so that if you have to reschedule it will be easier to do it now rather than later.
Best of luck to you as your day at the Castle approaches.

Re: Disney Theme Parks after surgery
Hi midge&fudge and
I am 16 weeks out and don't think I could do a big trip now, but I seem to have developed other medical issues since surgery and one of the Drs I have seen says that it all may be just my body having a hard time "reconditioning". (On the other hand, if some one were to offer me a trip to England, I might manage it!!!)
Others will tell you that they could easily have gone on a trip like that 10 weeks out!!!!!
Everyone heals at a different pace. With some it depends on the condition they are in when they go into the surgery!!
Would it cost to postpone? Would it cause major inconvenience? How mad would everyone else be if the trip was postponed? How upset would they be if it was not postponed and you were not enjoying the trip? Can you wait until a couple of weeks after your surgery to decide?
Your Dr might have better advice when it comes to the trip. Does he/she think it's a good idea?
I have probably been no help at all.
Good luck with your vacation decision and your surgery!!
Hugs,
Suzanne

Re: Disney Theme Parks after surgery
Hiya,
I'm in England too and 6 weeks today after TAH/BSO.
My concern would be that you can't predict whether your surgery will be straightforward or complicated, whether your recovery will include infection/haematoma/incision issues, whether you will/will not lose a lot of blood and be anaemic (therefore exhausted), whether any hormonal issues will be easily addressed etc etc.
Certainly my surgery ended up being very different to my expectations and my recovery has been a lot slower than I thought.
A lot of women on this site say they don't feel back to normal for at least 6 months after surgery. Some even say a year! If I were in your shoes I would definitely delay the holiday of a lifetime for at least 6 months.
If it had just been a couple of weeks in Skegness I wouldn't have been concerned !! but this holiday sounds special and being physically limited would be such a shame.

Re: Disney Theme Parks after surgery
I live in Florida and I've been to the Magic Kingdom park. The Disney parks are all large and very spread out and involve a LOT of walking. You can, however, rent motorized scooters within the park that are pretty comfortable. I think the cost for rental is about $50US. I used one the last time I went and it made a big difference. And when you're on a scooter you get easier access to the rides.
With sunscreen/hat, lots of water, pain meds and a scooter it might be doable. Are you staying at one of the Disney resorts? they're all integrated within the park complex and they're a lot closer than other hotels in Orlando. And you can get back to the hotels via boat, monorail etc from within the parks.

Re: Disney Theme Parks after surgery
I haven't had surgery yet, but I've done Disney many times. I think it's extrememly tiresome for an average person, I think I'd err on the side of caution and not do or plan it until you KNOW you are feeling better. There is way too much walking, often times finding a place to sit comfortably (out of the sun) is difficult.
But good luck whatever you decide.

Re: Disney Theme Parks after surgery
I took my elderly parents to Disney a few times and we rented and pushed them in a wheelchair. Assuming you have a normal recovery and are able to go on the rides (I would question some of the roller coasters which can jerk you around) I think you would definitely want to have a scooter or wheelchair to get from the hotel to the theme park and then just to get around in the park. And you do get special access to the rides and don't have to wait in such a long line. Disney is quite accessible and experienced dealing with people in wheelchairs and scooters.
The rest of us were so tired from walking the distances that sometimes my parents would give us a turn in the wheelchair just to rest! Mei Mei

Re: Disney Theme Parks after surgery
Thank you everyone!
But I don't want to use a wheelchair or a scooter! I am turning into an old frail lady! sob!sob! And we are not in a Disney hotel
This hysterectomy has come at me rather quickly - I thought I was doing okay after an endometrial ablation nearly two years ago but then less than 2 weeks ago, so much blood and clots which I cannot contain and I daren't leave the house and now I have to have surgery - sob!sob! - and I want to see Mickey - sob! sob!
Husband going to try to change Disney for February school holiday, so that will be 5months after surgery! Surely I will be okay then

Re: Disney Theme Parks after surgery
February is a great time to go to Disney! It's cheaper, less crowded and the weather will be nice but not hot! I am four months post op now and could do a Disney themepark right now without problems. I am running 2.5 miles four times week and feel in great shape. I did some hiking in the mountains two weeks ago but was not always up for that. I could not lift my legs up high enough to go on/off rocks and there were many of them. My husband and kids had to give me a push or help me down.
At six weeks post op I went to a water park and it was no fun. I could not go down any of the slides on the mats (on my belly!!!!) and even going down the slides in an inner tube was too risky. I could easily bump into something and I was really worried about protecting my stomach.
Another thing you need to realize is that sitting in an airplane seat for 8 hours is going to be a nightmare at ten weeks post op. I don't know if I could do it right now. I need to put my feet up and relax my stomach even now at four months. You will get very bloated when you are stuck in that airplane seat (I've flown transatlantic 50+ times and know what it's all about) and get extremely uncomfortable. I would wear a very comfortable flowing dress. No trousers and no waistband at all.
My surgery was laparoscopic and very uneventful. I was slow to heal the first six weeks but have really felt great since then. Every week is better and I am in a better shape than I have been in years.
Good luck!
