Hysterectomy Surgery booked in

So I saw my surgeon last week and I'm booked in for Monday 13th October for my surgery. She advised they will take take my uterus and cervix - but will look at both ovaries in the hope that they can at least leave one so I won't have to go onto hormone replacement. It's a big thing to face at 42 when it has finally hit home that I will never have any children of my own. I swing from one extreme to the other when I see pregnant women - sometimes I am so jealous I would love to punch them in the face, other times I want to go up to them and hug them and ask if they really understand how blessed they are to be able to have children. Surgeon tells me that my reactions are perfectly normal - even though they seem bizarre to me.
Anyhow - as the time gets closer I am getting a little ore nervous each day. Just wanted to share to see if any others in the group have felt anything similar leading up to their operations.

Re: Hysterectomy Surgery booked in

Hi! I'm 45 & recently had LAVH for anemia...that was main reason for having it though a cyst was suspected on my left ovary. It turned out to be adhesions on my ovary & colon that doctor removed along with my uterus & cervix. I too had such reservations & worried myself sick the few weeks after I scheduled it...now 3 weeks after it, I am glad I did it if only to fix the anemia & lose the horrible periods. My recovery so far has been fairly smooth & not near as bad as I had conjured up in my head. I was down for about 2 weeks & then gradually have been able to do more this past week (couple trips out of the house to have lunch with a friend & to checkup). Wishing you peace & wellness on your surgery next month.

I never wanted kids, not my thing. My hysterectomy is scheduled for 10/1 and I can't WAIT to get rid of this thing! They're taking my uterus, fallopian tubes, cervix and leaving my ovaries since arthritis runs in my family. I'm nervous as all get out about the pain, as my pain tolerance is zero. Wishing you good luck and best wishes on your surgery!

Re: Hysterectomy Surgery booked in

Hi msstitch01 -

Your feelings are completely normal. There is such a finality to this surgery, and it is hard to say goodbye to your uterus. This is an organ that has made its presence known to you, for better or worse, for decades. And now it is being taken from you by force. Of course you are upset. Of course you are jealous of women who still have a uterus, and are pregnant.

I never wanted kids, but I would see pregnant women and become jealous. This carried on for me even after surgery. I mourned the loss of my uterus, cervix and ovaries for a long time. You are not alone in this. I several times before my surgery and many more times after. The intensity of these feelings did diminish with time, but I can still get them from time to time..

It is okay to feel this way. You are not alone in this. We are here for you and understand how you feel.
