Re: Question pre-op with Vaginal hyster
I was originally scheduled for 2 weeks off from my desk but very intense and stressful job. Lots of deadlines, reports, and 30 people reporting to me. Ten days into my recovery, I realized that there was no way I'd be ready, so my surgeon gave me another 2 weeks. Going back to such physical work at 2 weeks seems impossible. Other sisters have asked their primary doctor to write them out for more time. You might try that route of your surgeon won't budge.

I now have the extreme mood swings to the point a coworker asked me "Do you ever NOT have PMS" Fact is I realize it only happens about 1 1/2 weeks of the month. That means I was "normal" only about 136 days out of the year... that just isn't living. I had enough sick time and vacation time to use and if I don't use it now I will not have it as I'm planning on changing not only jobs but careers.
All things considered I am having a TVH (total vaginal hysterectomy) with a Lt. salpingo-oopherectomy. (My Rt ovary is already out due to cysts at age 30. ) The doctor has given me the option on the ovary but from what I have heard the ovary is what is the culprit of the mood swings. I plan on trying the HRT maybe a steady low level will be better suited and if that is not true I can always stop the medication. Any input here with others that had PMDD and hysterectomy would be appreciated... Also any input on the HRT and/or the ovary coming out would be of benefit...(I think)
The other thing that has me a little worried is the doctor has said that it is possible I will be able to go back to work at 2 weeks. First of all I don't want to. I work as a nurse and get infections with abdominal female surgeries (that is why they are going with the vaginal route) Secondly because I'm a nurse I do a lot of lifting and pushing. I don't know that I want to take that chance. Thirdly with the fact that I deal with patients that are not always mentally stable I put myself in danger of injury with patients mental outbursts. Fourthly- my work does not allow us to work with weight or lifting restrictions. The only thing is I get the feeling that if I do take the 5 weeks that I'm thinking of that I will seem like a wimp who manipulated the sick leave system. (That is how much sick leave, vacation, and personal time I will have so yes to a point I am manipulating that but I hate to think I'm a wimp.) He says I'll get bored over the 6 weeks... you know... I'm ok with bored. I'm a little scared about this one am I being unreasonable and a wimp? The scheduler told me if it was the female doctor she would tell me 6 weeks without question but the male doctor takes the approach of telling the minimum he will allow to be off to the maximum. I don't want to get hurt and I don't want to go back too early. (Secretly I also don't want to go back before Thanksgiving as that is the only holiday our family celebrates and I don't want to miss it... . ) Any input from those who have experienced vaginal hysters would be appreciated. How long did you take off work after your vag hyster. TIA...
For some this may seem extreme for others you will understand and want to shout "amen sister"

My doc said two weeks too. I came out of surgery to find he won't even see me for over 3 weeks. Its your time. You take it too make sure you recover fully. I have a desk job and I'm gonna be at least 4. I've never really had a major surgery. I had my gallbladder out in june and went back to work in 4 days. Trust me you will need the time. I have had a hard time coming to grips with this but I did it. It does not matter if anyone thinks you are milking the system. Your health is worth all the milking you need. Hugggsss to you.

Re: Question pre-op with Vaginal hyster
I don't think your manipulating the system. You EARNED those sick days. Those are days for you to use when you need them to get well. Now is when you will need them, so use them!
You don't want to go back to work too early and run the risk of injuring yourself pulling/pushing/lifting a patient. If that happens, you will have to take off even more time to heal what you messed up by going back to work too early.
Give yourself enough time to heal. Good luck with your upcoming surgery.

My Dear Sister
I used to do the work you are doing now. Psych nurse on a locked unit. Violent patients. I am pre-op like you so I can't speak from personal post op experience (yet). However, I will recommned that you take longer than two weeks! Go with your instincts and take more time.
Nursing is physically demanding and you are likely to overdo it so as not to leave your coworkers in a bind. Physically assaultive patients are a real risk to you. Listen to your heart on this one.
I have an office job and am planning on 2-3 weeks minimum. If it was my old psych job I would take 4-6 weeks. But curious to hear from those who have "been there".
Good luck and see you on the other side :-)

Re: Question pre-op with Vaginal hyster
I am recovering from lavh. I had some mild discomfort for abour a week and a half whick percocett and ibuprofin took care of. I have both ovaries, cervix, cyst avd uterus removed. I had already gone through my change. I did what they yold me, took stool softeners and gas x for about a week. I am a little sore but getting stronger each day. It is scary but I found that being positive about the outcome helped. My family has a history of ovarian cancer. I am happy to say everything for me was benign.
It's normal to be svared, best of luck and lots of hugs.

Re: Question pre-op with Vaginal hyster
I told my boss today. Considering we have 4 night nurses and 2 gave notice and resigned since the weekend and now I'm having surgery- he was a little stressed but not too bad. I explained to him that I was trying to avoid the massive number of p/g women we had this year (13 since December and our facility only has around 64 employees total all departments). I also told him I was working it so I would be back by Christmas and had already talked previously with another nurse about trading my holiday for her holiday (Thanksgiving for Christmas) He was happy about that. I explained I needed to have it done by the end of the year due to the insurance deductable being met and almost having the maximum out of pocket met. I explained that it was easier to shorten the FMLA than it was to lengthen it but the recovery time was listed as 2-6 weeks but I realistically didn't see it as possible to return in 2 and was thinking it was going to be more like the 5-6. (I got to thinking and when I had the single ovary removed worked 12 hour shifts in a lot less stressful environment and was off for 3 weeks and wished I had taken off another few days. That was an easier facility to work at and didn't have near the stress. I was also 13 years younger... ya definately working on the 5-6 week time frame and will quit feeling guilty until I tell the scheduling nurse who is about to get one of her worst nightmares- 7 night shifts a week and only 1 nurse to work... I feel bad but I'm not canceling the procedure.
