Emotional but still have ovaries

I am 46 and had my hysterectomy on 11/17. Everything was taken except my ovaries. I have both of them. I also had to have a bladder sling. I'm finding myself to be more emotional. Crying mostly. Is that normal? I know that there are hormone issues, but I thought it mostly was if you had your ovaries removed??? Am I crazy?

Also, I'm kinda upset that I wasn't fully prepared on what to expect after a hysterectomy. The aches and pains that come and go, the not fitting into my jeans because of the swelling. I wish my doctor would have told me more of what to expect afterwards.

I guess I'm feeling out of sorts....

Re: Emotional but still have ovaries

I too still have both of my ovaries. I'm a few weeks ahead of you (10/28). Post-op Weeks 3 & 4 were the strangest -- I'd have hot flashes regularly and felt very emotional. But now in week 6 (5 too) I am over that.

This site has helped more than my doctor and that seems to be the same experience for many of our "sisters". As much as I liked my doctor, she just had a baby -- so what really does she know about the experience of having a hysterectomy. I follow her medical advice but go forward with other issues without her. Hope you feel a little better soon too.

Best wishes to you in your recovery.

Re: Emotional but still have ovaries

OMG! I was just about to create a new post to ask the same question! I have a partial Hysterectomy Aug 30 2011 so it has been a little over 3 months. Only my Uterus was removed. All of a sudden this week I find myself crying for no particular reason. I have never been one to cry at the drop of a hat. Monday I was sitting at my desk at work and tears just started flowing. I hope this goes away soon. Help!

Re: Emotional but still have ovaries

Yea, that's what my doctor said too -- that my ovaries were in shock and to wait & see if they woke up before turning to HRT or something else.

Re: Emotional but still have ovaries

When the uterus is removed the blood supply to the ovaries is interrupted. So sometimes the ovaries "go to sleep". Once the blood supply is re-established the ovaries start functioning like before. I also cried a great deal post op. Sometimes weeping for days at a time. I too was surprised at how much my doctor didn't prepare me for. If it wasn't for the information I acquired here I don't know how I would have managed. It's like they put us on a need-to-know basis. But it's our bodies and we need to know! Hang in there it does get better.
