Very Nervous
I went to my doctor because I thought I had a bladder infection - she didn't find any blood in my urine and said - You should have an internal to check - I agreed - it had been over a year since I saw my ob/gyn. She told me my uterus was enlarged and I should have and ultrasound. I went - the fibroid tumor is large and pressing on my bladder - they told me to call my ob/gyn - who gave me an appointment inless than 24 hours (unheard of!). He told me flat out - you need a hysterectomy - no, ifs, ands , or buts. Through your old c-section insicion - total uterus removal - keep the ovaries. I sat there crying - he looked at me as if he couldn't understand why I was so upset. I just scheduled my surgery today - it's for May 26th - I am not telling my friends/neighbors. I have told my husband, parents and boss. I am very nervous to tell my children (7 & 11) - I have decided not to tell them until the week before I go into the hospital - my younger one is so attached to me - I don't know how he'll take it - my older one is very sentsitive. I, myself, am a nervous wreck - thinking the worst.

Hi Sam16, sorry to hear your news. I'm from CT also (Waterbury here). Maybe you should have a second opinion. Isn't it a myomectomy where they remove fibroids only and keep the other organs?

Hi Sam! Here are some 's. Well of course you are nervous! You really didn't have time to think about anything. You also haven't, yet,had the symptoms of pain, heavy bleeding, bowel troubles etc. that so many of us have and it has driven us to this decision. Its hard to wrap your brain around 'hysterectomy' when you were thinking 'antibiotics for bladder infection'. There can be alternative treatments for fibroids, depending on your own situation. Here is a link to information about fibroids and the treatment options available: https://www.hystersisters.com/vb2/article_191359.htm
I don't want you to change your mind, I just want you to have information to contemplate. Ask your doctor questions. The more information you have, the better able you are to cope.

If you feel like this about it, please, for your own peace of mind, get a second, or third, or fourth opinion, until you find a dr. that you feel comfortable with, and who will give you OPTIONS. Dr.s who don't give options to me, are just concerned with the bottom line, not with the care of the patient.
I hope you find some peace, and keep us informed.

I agree with everyone else! Get more opinions! If and when you decide to go thru with this, I would give your kids more than a week to prepare for the surgery. I was very hesitant in telling my son who is 12. But it turned out to be the right thing to do. This has enabled him to ask questions, voice fears etc. But, I did not tell him until I knew that it was a sure things. And I had to prepare him that he will be "mommys" primary care giver once I get home. (DH just started his own business and works very long hours). We are preparing for this as a family. Good luck!

Well your story sounds a lot like mine. Except I had no symptoms at all. In fact I even found the fibroid on my own. I was laying on my back one night and thought, "Gee I feel pregnant." It had been a year and a half since my last pelvic. I went to the first doc who said live with the big uterus or have a hyst. Then I went on line and researched a ton. Explored the options. I went for a second opinion. The second doctor also recommended the hyst. But nobody ever told me I had to do it no if' and's or but's. However your bladder is involved so you may have something going on that is more urgent. I would say get another opinion. In the end mine just kept on growing so I am relieved to have it gone. Plus the fast rate of growth of my fibroid was of concern even though they rarely are cancer.
I will tell you this isn't the easiest thing I've ever been through but it's not the hardest either. You do need to feel at peace with your decision however so do whatever it takes to get you there. And get that second opinion!

Thanks for the thoughts and suggestions of second opinion's. Although, I have been having problems with my periods for over ten years - and knew about the fibroids but they were never anything to worry about. The doctor told me my uterus is over the size of four months pregnant and it will just get bigger. Sex is painful, periods are terribles, there really isn't much choice, is there?

Very Nervous
Hi Girls, hear is my situation. I have shared with our son who is seven. Just because he is very close to me and I wanted him to understand what was going on and why I've been unable to do the things we used to do. He completely understands. Believe it or not, we don't give them enough credit. It is so amazing to me how considerate they can be as well. Today, I decided to stop in at his school and have lunch with him. His first question to me after we sat down was "Mom, are you in pain right now? Because if you are, you can go home and rest and I will pray for you" What a man he can be. That just melted me you know. At least I know I'm doing something right in raising him.
I agree with everyone as well, to getting a second opinion. We got three just to be sure. It never hurts, just the copay you may have to pay to hear it.
I to am 33. I've been with my husband for 14 years this December. We have a seven year old son. We tried to have more children but after three misscarriages we decided to look at adoption. We are the typical secondary fertility story.
We are originally from Northeast Ohio, moved to Central Kentucky in later part of 2003. Although we love it here, I have had three surgeries since being here. 7/04 I had a milamectomy to remove a grapefruit size fibriod, two lemon size cycsts, and stage three endometrosis.
Since than I have had to laproscopies with the last being December 05 showing stage four endo along with sever adhesions. It also showed the endo wrapped around my bladder, colon, and uterus with my uterus being attached to my rectum.
After several opinions and fertility specialist visits in Cincinnati, Louisville, and Lexington==all physicians agreed I needed a hysterectomy. Now I'm in the most unbearable pain. I had been on Lortab for a year--now percocets (not helping much). I'm 33years old and have so many emotions going through me.
We are fortunate to have a great group of friends here and our church is our family. Our immediate family back in Northeast Ohio can not get away to help with this surgery.
I have a supportive husband, however I'm nervous about him taking on all the worries while I'm recovering. My doctor stated I would be in the hospital for 4 or 5 days with a recovery time of 8-10 weeks. I will be taking off about 15 by choice with working from home after week 4 part-time.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated. I love this site and am so appreicated that people can come here for support.
We are going to adopt, not sure on any agency yet--we are open to suggestions as well.
Thanks sisters. May god bless us all. REMEMBER:
WE ARE RIGHT WERE GOD WANTS US TO BE AT THIS TIME.
