Ibuprofen and cramps and flow...

This may be silly but I am curious. I am having a really painful period, and have been taking ibuprofen regularly for the cramps/pain. Does the ibuprofen cause the flow to stop? It seems when I take it regularly the flow stops and then if I miss a dose, it starts up. This time, since I started Friday, it has gone full force for a few hours, then nothing for a few hours, sometimes as much as 6-8 then it starts heavy again. I need the pain relief but dont want to prolong it... hope this makes sense!

Ibuprofen won't make your flow stop and can actually thin your blood (like aspirin does) and make you bleed more. I was taken off it completely during my periods because my GYN said that it thins your blood and I was bleeding enough as it was. I think there must be something else causing it. Maybe your doctor could give you more input. At any rate, you day is coming up soon, so think of this as a "last period"!!! It is the best thing you could ever do to improve your life! Good luck!

Why are you having a hyst? ( sorry if I missed it somewhere) Maybe it's just your period. Mine varies also. Heavy, then light, then new stuff, then old stuff. Cramping, then not. It also varies in duration. Mine sounds the same as yours. It seems to start and stop whenever it wants. Hence...one of the needs for a hyst.

Hi nyxluna,

Actually, Ibuprofen is an antiinflamatory. By reducing inflamation, it can cause your bleeding to decrease a tremendous amount. Aleve does the same thing, only it takes 3 hours to begin to work. I had to take it regularly for my periods to control the bleeding and it did a tremendous job. It would sometimes slow it down from several ounces a minute to just spotting.

You do have to be careful not to take too much though, because it can have the opposite affect and make you bleed more.

s,
Kay
