Brachytherapy side effects? How long will they last?

I recently finished 3 brachytherapy treatments for stage 1b endometrial cancer. Compared with what others are dealing with, 3 treatments should be a piece of cake, yes? Well, the treatments themselves went fine, but a week later all the weirdness started happening.

Vomiting and diarrhea which made for a bad night. Once my innards were empty, I was fine...'til I had to use my innards again a few days later. Rinse and repeat.

I had expected sex to be a stretchy affair, but the swelling and burning came as a big unpleasant surprise. Aspirin helps, and I am trying Replens, but tell me please...will these side effects go away? When?

Thanks for listening.

Re: Brachytherapy side effects? How long will they last?

Vomiting doesn't sound like a typical side effect from Brachytherapy, but diahorrea is more likely .Maybe you’ve picked up an infection of some sort? Your Doctor should be able to test for that.

I had 3 brachytherapy treatments and felt mildly tired immediately afterwards, but nothing else.

The burning/swelling will subside, but maybe keep that area ‘out of action’ for a while!

Thank you, Beth, this helps. If the gut issues continue, my doc will certainly hear about it I feel fine otherwise, no fever or anything. With time hopefully all of this will pass.

Re: Brachytherapy side effects? How long will they last?

Talked to the doc yesterday. Apparently side effects can last 6-8 weeks (!)

So I'm curling up for the long haul :P
