Pre-Op yesterday...will have a cath for a week!
Yikes!
I thought I would come home w/out a cath, and yesterday I learned that I will go home with one, and have it until my 1 week visit. Waaaaaaaa!!! I told the dr. I didn't really want to do that, and he said the reason is because he doesn't want the bladder filling up and bothering all the other work he did in my tummy. He also said he does not give a sedative when I first arrive in pre-op. Boohoo! I will be so nervous, and I was looking forward to that. I will be in a pre-op room for 2 hours....
I will also wear some surgical hose while in the hospital...anybody else do that? I think I have a very conservative dr., which I guess is a good thing.
Anyhow....3 days to go (not counting today!).
Prayers to everyone going in Nov. 26th. It will be a wonderful day!

Pre-Op yesterday...will have a cath for a week!
P.S.
I have to do a fleet enema and a warm water douche the night before. My surgery is scheduled for 12:30 pm, and I will be fasting until that time!!!!
I sure was hoping to have an 8:00 surgery time. He keeps pushing it back....

Grace,
Boy, do I understand your frustration. My surgery isn't until Jan, but its at 12:30 too. I'm worried about being dyhydrated and the difficulty they will have starting an IV because of it. I plan on getting up at midnight and drinking a bunch of water to keep my fluid levels up. (My mom is an RN and suggested this) Best wishes for a quick week so you get your cath out faster!

Pre-Op yesterday...will have a cath for a week!
I went for my pre-op yesterday too for my surgery on the 26th. When I went to the dr. office to pick up my papers to take to the hospital, my DR. came in and talked to me for a while. He answered every one of my questions, even the one about my being uncomfortable with people being "down there". He said he would make sure that I was draped so well that it would be hard to even tell what "it" was. He said that as soon as I got to the hospital they would give me something that would relax me so much that I wouldn't care WHAT was done! Then he hugged my neck and said he'd see me Monday. He sure did calm my fears a lot.
I too have to do the fleet enema, and am having a hard time imagining how to do that to myself. My DH said he'd be glad to help but I don't think I'm ready for that adventure just yet. Now all we have to do is enjoy ourselves with family today, and hope that waiting is really the hardest part. Good luck on Monday.

Jazzibell,
You'll be fine with the enema. It's a bit tricky at first. The best way is to lay on your side in the fetal position. And if you have trouble, let dh do it since he offered! I think it's very sweet that he's willing to do the gross stuff. My dh has always been good with that. He even did my enema once when I had to have a colonoscopy and was so sick from the bowel prep stuff. Hang in there!
Grace,
I'm sorry you'll have to have a cath for a week. I've never heard of that. I also have to wear the hose. I'm VERY closterphobic, so I'm a bit worried about that. We're almost there. We'll be feeling great in no time!

Pre-Op yesterday...will have a cath for a week!
Grace - I didn't go home with the cath, but I had to go back to the castle the day after I was released to have one put in as my bladder was not emptying. I had it at home for a week. It wasn't bad at all! I was so scared of it and actually it was very comfortable. Don't worry. It's not the nightmare I thought and I think you will find that also.
Also when the anethesiologist came in to pre-op to see me, I told him I was nervous and he came back 2 minutes later to give me a sedative. I have read of this happening over and over on the post -op board, so this may happen to you also.
Good Luck,
Starbgirl

Pre-Op yesterday...will have a cath for a week!
Thank you all for your replies. My mom had this done a year ago by the same dr. She came home with the cath, and she assures me it is not that bad. I will be staying with her until the cath comes out. I guess it will be nice not having to get up and down all the time to go to the bathroom. Also, about halfway through the week, I start blocking the cath occasionally so my bladder can relearn how to fill itself up.
Gee, I hope my anesthesiologist offers to give me a sedative.
Blessings and prayers to everyone going in on the 26th. I will report in as soon as I get home from the royal castle.

Grace, Best of luck to you with everything!!! I would ask the anes for a sedative even if he doesn't offer you one. He is there for YOU~you are the queen of this show! I hope that your prep goes well. Good luck for great surgery and speedy recovery!

Pre-Op yesterday...will have a cath for a week!
Hi Grace,
I had the hose and they weren't that bad. They actually provide a little warmth if you have a tendancy to get cold. The only thing that was a tad bothersome was I got a little itchy. Fortunately I had a big plastic comb in my bag of tricks that I was able to reach down there and scratch away. (over the hose they had some wrap type things that inflated gently every 5 or 10 minutes, I guess this was for circulation purposes) You're right about the cath maybe not being such a bad idea. During the night of my hospital stay, the nurse had to empty my pan 3 times. I couldn't imagine having had to get up to pee all those times. I'm sure your anesthesiologist will ask if you anything pre surgery. The next thing you know it will be over.
Best wishes and a speedy recovery.

Pre-Op yesterday...will have a cath for a week!
Hi,
WHen I was at the castle they put in the cath. while I was under then removed it the next day. It was not painful at all. By the evening my bladder was so full I could not even sit. I told the dr. he ordered the nurse to go ahead and insert the cath. (not painful). It was removed the next morning and when I was discharged the dr. said if I had trouble voiding(peeing) he would put it in and have me wear it for a week until the bladder got back to its routine. Don't worry I'm sure that what the dr. suggest will be for your own good.
