I had a male RN. Yaaaa. I was glad I had taken care of that myself.
Please do not shave yourself unless instructed by your doctor to do so. We have had ladies here whose surgeries have been cancelled because they shaved themselves rather than let them take care of it at the hospital. Because of the danger of infection, *most* doctors and hospitals prefer that we not do the job at home. If you would like to, ask your doctor first.

By the way, in all my hospital trips, my all-time favorite RN, who was one of my nurses after two different surgeries, was male. He was the most compassionate, kind, professional nurse anyone could ever ask for. He had to change my pad and ice pack a couple of times after my hyst, and also change my sheets because I was bleeding so heavily, and he went out of his way to be helpful and NOT embarrass me for one second. I wouldn't hesitate to have him for a nurse any time, for any procedure.

-Linda

That's right. I've been in for several surgeries that I had to be shaved for, all but one told me not to do it myself because of infection, and the one dr told me I can do it myself, but to use an electric razor so as not to knick or open any skin.

Re: Enema?!

I was also told not to shave due to infection risk. I had to do GoLytly (10 yrs ago, same Dr) for a ovarian cyst laproscopically but this time he just wants me to do a clear liquid diet 24 hours before surgery and miralax Sunday night and Monday morning (surgery is Tuesday am). My Daughter has had to do several enemas, or I have had to do it for her, and they aren't too difficult... good luck

Re: Enema?!

I had to do the Fleet Enema also. I put a towel on my bed, had to give it to myself. It really wasn't so bad.

Concerning the shaving. I was not told to shave myself before the surgery, and they did not shave me at all. LAVH 12/28. I guess the instructions are different for different doctors.

I was told it was my choice....Just like it was my choice to shave my legs and pitts. Which I do daily.
Being in Houston where you usually dress in summer clothing most of the year...You get very efficient in shaving all, daily. I could not imagine going to the hospital with body hair....OMG.
And who at our age still cuts themselves when they shave.
I even shaved while in labor before heading to the hospital for my delivery.

And regards to someone refussing to do the surgery because you shaved....

Wow you had your hysterectomy 8 years ago...thats a long time for post op forum and advice.

Re: Enema?!

I had to do one the night before my surgery and it wasn't bad. Just like the others have said I stayed in the bathroom too. Works pretty quick so it is over soon!

Good Luck!

Re: Enema?!

I had to take two very strong laxatives at noon the day before my surgery. Then two enemas the evening before my surgery. This actually caused me more anxiety than the thought of surgery. It wasn't that bad. It's over in a matter of minutes. I did search the internet for the "best" way to do this myself.

I used a large towel and pillow on the bathroom floor. Walking to the bathroom really isn't an option.

My best advice is to relax.
