has anyone tried the ’no dairy-exercice-natural’ approach before surgery?

Hi everyone,

I am scheduled for a November 18 hysterectomy and I am getting very nervous.
I have dutifully researched all alternatives (thanks to this wonderful site in great parts)
I have a 9 cm fibroid (and then some) anemia, polyp, the usual profile.
I looked into UFE and don’ like some aspects of it (new procedure, does not always work, dead fibroma floating in uterus, etc). I am not really interested in myomectomy (fibroids grow back).
The other alternative, which I did not investigate yet) i hear, is dietary changes such as no dairy products plus a few other things.
Has anyone here tried that route before deciding to have a hysterectomy?
I would love to hear from you - this would help me decide if it is a good idea to try that route
Thanks a million

Well, I have to say that I'd never tried that route consciously as a way to improve my endometriosis. However, since I lived that way anyway, I can say that it helps cope with the symptoms better (although the anemia won't resolve with dietary therapy alone). It also doesn't get rid of any fibroids that might already be there; in fact, if you substitute soy for your dairy, you're getting some phytoestrogen in there as well.

Have you gotten a second opinion yet? Sometimes it can even take a third opinion; there are so many choices within the concept of "hysterectomy", such as whether to keep your cervix, ovaries, etc.. It's very hard to sort it all out without checking in with one or more other GYNs about what the right route is for YOU.

Hope you're able to get your questions answered soon. This surgery, as you obviously know, is permanent . It always seems to me that the women who were the most satisfied with their results were those who knew, going in, exactly what it was that they wanted and needed. I know that's not the answer you want to hear, but there have been women who postponed their dates to give them the time they needed to make their decisions. If you have the "luxury" of time (that is, you're not dealing with cancer or some other emergency situation) then it would be worth it to do a bit more research to make sure this is the right choice for YOU.

Hope you're able to get the answers that you need. You may be able to prevent anything further from growing (though even that's not proven) by dietary changes, but the fibroids already there, though they may shrink, are highly unlikely to just disappear.

Well...I'm on the dietary restrictions, sort of. One of my symptoms happens to be IBS (irritable bowel syndrone), which, if my Adenmyosis is not the cause, it surely makes things worse. If gassyness and bowel movement problems are your main symptoms, diet will help. I have no problems associated with milk products but some other people with similar symptoms do (it's actually lactose intolerance, which can occur later in life) - you can tell if you have it by cutting out milk for a week or so and see if things are better. More soluble fiber in the diet is also good.

With all of this in mind, however, the diet does not help the bloat, cramps, backaches, crankyness and some other symptoms I have developed. It won't hurt to try this diet, but it might not get rid of your particular symptoms.

Dear Prem,

You may be able to find more info on the dietary effects towards fibroids at the fibroid websites. There are lots of good websites listed in the Resources forum here:

Get smart about your symptoms and your options and make the best choice for YOU.
