Having hysterectomy next Thursday, June 18. Still deciding what to do ovaries.
Hi,
I scheduled my hysterectomy today for next Thursday, June 18th, and have been on the internet since I got home! I am 46 years old and am still undecided about what to do with my ovaries. I really want to keep them as I have had no symptoms of menopause and have a feeling surgical menopause will be a nightmare for me, although the doctor claims it won't be to bad with low Loestrin for the next 5 years.
I had genetic testing, and I am negative. However, my mom was diagnosed with ovarian cancer at age 38 and died at age 48. Her younger sister is fine at age 64 and there is no other family to track.
I am having the surgery due to heavy bleeding, flooding and clotting after having a D&C in 2010 and another in 2014. I have a few small fibroids and very thick lining. I am having the laparoscopic, robot assisted surgery with Da Vinci.
My doctor says he will respect my decision either way but I can tell he thinks I should take them out. He said he will leave them, if there is no cancer in the uterus.
I see reference to taking the ovaries if there is a strong family history, but how do I quantify if my family history is ok to leave them in?
I was also wondering if my eggs will still be in good condition, should I want to use them in the future with a surrogate, or does the removal of the uterus damage the eggs?
I would appreciate any insight from this wonderful group!

Thanks for your response. I see we are a similar age. Did you remove your ovaries? If so, what has been your experience with surgical menopause? Are you familiar with lo loestrin?

Re: Having hysterectomy next Thurday, June 18. Still deciding what to do ovaries.
It is tough decision, but if you are confident that the family history does not warrant removal and they are disease free, then keep them. If you can keep them it is better than being on HRT.
But, if there is uterine cancer, they should go though since most are estrogen fed plus you would not be able to take HRT either.
If you decide to keep them, plan to be very diligent about yearly pelvic exams since ovarian cancer is usually not caught until late. Taking the tubes will cut down the chances since it is now believed that ovarian cancer often starts in the tubes.
