Jan. 20th big day

After reading so many posts- I feal pretty lucky about my situation. Having a VH with rectocele repair and a bladder sling. The doc said, the rectocele is a must,(did not even know I had this problem) the bladder sling was do it now or will def. need it done down the road. The hysterectomy is for prolapse. Sex is not fun when everything is in the way! This may sound strange, my DH kinda laughed, but overall my uterus has been good to me- feel bad having them just throw it in the trash or whatever the hospital does with it. Is it weird to want to bury it?

I don't seem nervous about this procedure at all- like I am numb to it- (the sling does make me a little nervous, just the idea of having something foreign placed inside of me.) I feel very matter of fact- which I guess is good.

How soon were you up and about- just walking around the house etc.

I do feel bad that we scheduled the procedure during my teen kids (not drivers yet) winter break. It will be lousy for them, but I felt at least I would not have to worry about carpool homework etc..

Any advice how soon before the procedure to tell the kids- they have finals the next 2 weeks so I don't want them to worry, but I also don't want to say the day before- hey..

Also, 2 questions about surgery that I did not ask the doctor yet-
Can you have sex the day before surgery or is that a bad idea? Was also thinking of doing one of those brazillian waxes- anyone do that before a VH? Thought it would be easier for the doc.

I am soooo thankful to the creators of this site!!

Welcome!!!
I am 17 days post op after a TVH with urethral sling. I cannot speak to what they do with the tissue, I suspect they incinerate it. I'm going to ask tho.
I did not have a rectocele repair but I wonder of they can fix that with the same incision they remove the uterus through? Or remove the uterus through the same incision they fix the rectocele through?
My sling seems to be working just fine, have not had single leak thus far. I was up walking about 6 hours after surgery ( I spent the night in the hospital) and made a couple laps every hour all night long.
I don't have children at home, they are grown and gone so I told them a couple weeks in advance.
I would def partake the day before, it's going to be a bit of a wait before you can partake again.
I waxed but not for their benefit, I did it for mine. I did have bleeding the first 24 hours post op, then a fair amount of discharge after that, and still, so I felt like it would be easier to clean and stay feeling clean, that is so important I think. It was a good choice for me.
I am also very thankful for this site. Be sure to find the group of sisters that are having surgery the same week as you!!
Happy thoughts and happy healing!!!

Re: Jan. 20th big day

Thanks amyo- was thinking the same thing about the "Brazilian".
Found out- the hosp. saves the tissue and eventually after they have a whole bunch of organs/ tissue etc. they do burn it.
Yep- 8weeks will be a long time- but I am trying to think of it as having the opportunity of a "second wedding night". Good question about using the same incision from the uterus for the rectocele- will have to ask.

Were you walking around every hourpost surgery because they wanted you to, or because you couldn't sleep?
Thanks so much for sharing- happy healing to you as well!

Re: Jan. 20th big day

I wouod check with your doctor before waxing. My surgeon told me not to wax or shave before surgery. There was a fear that you could have a small knick, cut, or burn that could cause an infection. I have found on this site that everyone has different situations but I would definitely not do anything before checking to see what your surgeon suggests.

Morning!!
Of course the first time they came in and said it was time, I wasn't excited. My Dr, although I love him, is not a huge fan of narcotic pain meds so he gave me 1-2 mg morphine every two to fours hours in my IV. Heck, at work (in the ER) we give much more and stronger meds for bladder infections. Anyhoo, after I saw that it felt good to get up and move, I told my nurse that was my plan. I couldn't sleep very well either and I was excited to be discharged home in the morning so I wanted to be ready. Plus I had heard that the catheter comes out early and I had to pee twice in a row (an hour apart for me) and have a bladder scan immediately afterwards that showed there was less than 150 ml of urine left. So they scanned my bladder after I pee'd, called a PVR (post void residual). It took hours to get to that point. ( I hope that isnt too confusing) I did NOT want to go home with the catheter in place like so many of the sisters do. I was willing to stay and keep trying until it happened and finally it did.
At this point if I could only give one piece of advice it would be to make sure you get enough protein pre-op, I started 2 wks before my surgery. I truly believes it helps with healing.
Prayers for calm for you pre-op and quick healing post-op!!!
Happy Tuesday!!
