Re: Car Ride Home?
I had mine filled pre-surgery with no problem. But, even so, they won't let you take your own medications in the hospital. I couldn't even bring my own thyroid or anti-depressant to take. I can imagine what they billed insurance for those two pills!

Re: Car Ride Home?
I was specifically told to bring my meds - the same two as yours - to the hospital. First thing in the morning, my first morning after surgery, a nurse came in to take my vitals. I asked her for some water to take my meds. She said, no, you can't take those, and walked out. I began to get a bit steamed.
Five minutes later, a different nurse comes in with a small paper cup with pills in it and a cup of water. The pills included... my meds. I recognized the shapes and colours.
The second nurse explained that they ask patients to bring their meds to the hospital in case they need to check the labels, but while in the hospital they provide meds from their own pharmacy. That was fine with me because I pay my own prescriptions at home but any meds I take while in the hospital are covered by the province, along with the rest of the hospital costs.
I should mention that I was at a francophone hospital, which means they're required to have staff on hand who can provide service in English but that not *all* staff are fluent in English. I'm guessing that the first nurse didn't have enough fluency to explain, so she did exactly what she was supposed to do, which was to get another nurse who could.
I was still pretty stoned at this point and not up for attempting to speak French, which I can do on a sort of minimal level. :-)

Car Ride Home After Hysterectomy?
I was in the same boat at the beginning of October. I had a lap blanket with me, and two regular sized pillows. One for across my belly, and one went behind me. I would suggest hot patches, to put on your shoulders for the gas pain. No matter what kind of pain killers I took, the gas pain wouldn't go away unless I used heat. Before I left the hospital I took an anti nausea pill, and the stronger pain pill. I was very tired after the drive, but I made it comfortably. You can too.

Re: Car Ride Home After Hysterectomy?
My husband was able to fill the percoset prescription at the hospital while I was in surgery. I was still unable to use that however when I was admitted to a room.
Definitely need something for the nausea. The first time I walked after surgery, I began heaving. Absolutely painful since I had abdominal surgery. I don't think any nurse or technician told me to hold a pillow to my stomach at those times or when I had to cough.

Re: Car Ride Home After Hysterectomy?
Thanks Ladies. I will definitely be going home the same day. I will add cold packs & heat patches/packs to my list. My pre-op instructions say that I will have rx ibuprofen called in for me prior to surgery but the Dr will give me an rx for narcotic pain relief post surgery. I definitely don't want to stay in a hotel -just my personal preference I prefer my own bed lol. Another question - how long until you were up & about the next day? I'm a single mom of 2 - they are 8 & 10 and pretty self sufficient (can get their own breakfast/snacks/get themselves on the bus in time etc) so I'm just trying to gauge how long I will need extra help. Also they will be in school for the first 3 days post op.

maybe bring a bowl in case you get sick, and a heating pad if possible.

Re: Car Ride Home After Hysterectomy?
I completely agree with you about being in one's own bed. I hated the hospital bed and wouldn't really sleep well until I went home.
Because I had a SAH my timing might not be what you experience. In short, the gas pains hit late the first night of surgery and I was encouraged to walk around the ward and again at home. I definitely needed help around the house for a week even though I was walking. My stamina was almost non-existent that first week and gradually rose by week 3. First 1 1/2 - 3 weeks for me I needed helpers. Hopefully some others who had lap surgery will answer as well.
