Moose no, skunks no, squirrels yes and woodpeckers but not in the garden. Dh used to cycle to his yoga class in Writtle which is semi rural and would see plenty of wildlife on the way. Some of our visitors are seasonal like the redwings and we used to have mistle thrush in the front garden because they liked the berries from the holly tree there. In Suffolk there are adders but rarely seen occasionally a grass snake. My boss goes somewhere to see red kites but not in Essex!

ICK! snakes!! Hate them! Having lived in the south most of my life, you'd think I would be used to them and seen alot. well except for the zoo, I have only seen 2. And let me tell you that neither time was fun. Last summer we were renovating and adding onto our house and Joe, one of the guys working here, was carrying a large roll of black tar paper. I was on the back porch with bella and brayden, who was only 6 months at the time, and he said something about having just seen a snake!! Of course, i clutched them to me and told him he shouldn't have told me that! He said it had been hiding in the tar paper roll and when he picked it up, it came slithering out. Even writing this, i am freaking out. SO i should have jsut turned around and walkd back inside.... but for some reason I looked to the ground outside where Joe was standing. Sure enough- there it was! A HUGE black snake!! Must have been 50 feet long jsut slithering around. yuck! So naturally I started screaming and pointing!! Betty came running out and swept little man out of my arms! Bella thought it was a joke or game and jsut started laughing. DH was in the office (top floor of the pool house) with one of the guys who works with him and they looked out the window and apparently thought it was hilarious!! So I'm shouting, screaming to kill it! Get it! So DH comes STROLLING downthe stairs and out to the yard, bending over laughing at me. LAUGHING! This was no joking matter! He sisn't even make a real attemt to ge tthe snake!! I was shaking and freaking out- and yes, I know black snakes are not harmful- but it's still a snake! I can handle almost anything, but put me near a snake and I freak out.
He still teases me about it to this day. and maybe it wasn't really 50 feet, but it had to be 25! DH said it was more like 5 or 6, but whatever. It looked longer to me. and it never was caught. Nasty thing slithered over to the empty lot next door and probably is thrilled with his escape and sunning himself by the pond. Nasty snake!

No snakes in the UK? Seriously?
Hmmm. i might need to give some thought to a move....
Pocono, great idea about the different sizes!! I'll give the store a call again. and in the meantime, I'll scrounge around my closet to see if I can find a jacket or scarf to put over one of the other dresses.
(a few minutes later)
I tried calling the store again- she's gone! GRR> So i called another dept. store and spoke with their personal shopper, she is on the case! Only problem is they are way more expensive and it's not going to go over well with DH. I tried on the summer dresses and nothing fits! I still had some baby weight last summer, which is finally gone.
I can't believe this is stressing me so much. I am NEVER like this... must be hormonal.
Grr. WHERE is the chocolate when I need it??? Pocono- send me some of those brownies!!

With all the visitors in our garden, I feel lucky that they are all 'cuties', You guy's in the US have some fairly awesome critters to come see you. It reminds me of our visits to Australia. Once we saw a huge lizard type creature rummaging in the dustbins behind a hotel, DH loathes lizards, even the tiny ones on holiday. He shouted to me to get back into the car, he was almost histerical , I though it was histerical...
Another time whilst we were there, we stayed in a lovely apartment with a garage underneath. It had the best views over the Whitsunday Islands. Well when we first arrived there was a spider the size of your hand on the floor in the garage, DH said stay away from it, DOH !!! anyway it wasn't alive, but I know that these things shed there skins , DH didn't know this. , DH couldn't undestand why I suddenly lost the ability to park the car and unlock the up and over garage door, I had visions of the creature slipping on to the car, I told him when we moved on...he was so not impressed.
To PLWC, we only have Grass snakes and adders in the UK, but you are lucky if you see one in your whole life and although they can bite, it's self defence on their part. They would see us first and be gone before you would ever see them.

Happy Now, your home in the country sounds wonderful. I'm glad you're taking such good care of the wildlife.

Pia and Bagpuss, I seem to belong to the "I have nothing to wear" club, too. Since I plan on returning to work next week I have got to go shopping. I hate to buy bigger slacks but don't see any way around it. Anyway, I'm headed to the mall today. Wish me luck.

There are so many posts today that I can't keep up so I'll just say I hope everyone is feeling better and has a great day.

Sorry Pia we do have snakes. We have have adders in Suffolk which are extremely poisonous but you would have to know where to find one. They are common in places like Dorset and Cornwall. Grass snakes are quite common but not big black ones on the patio. Hope your evening out goes well.

To Catnapper, We are just total softies when it comes to the animals that come in to the garden. DH went to get carry out for dinner last night and because we saw a sick fox at lunch time, he bought chicken specially for the fox. They eat better than we do.

Pia
Even though the other store is more expensive - it may well be worth it - if you get on their good side you can get called when things go on clearance before they are picked over. It sometimes costs a little more - but for clothes you can wear longer it's not so bad - my rule is if it's expensive I had better be able to wear it lots! of times - for trendy fun things I try to spend as little as possible - of course my dd has her fashion police badge out at all times! my one problems is I seem to find just what I want in the petite section - I'm 5'7' and right now a size 12? so that is not a good match. Have fun tonight

Reb- you're right, I know. Some items are totally worth the extra money... like jeans!!!I live in jeans and let me tell all of you ladies- as crazy as it sounds- jeans are WORTH the money!!! I used to be a die hard gap long and lean jeans wearer. Then I tried Paige premium denim, seven and citzens jeans...they make anyone have a cute butt!! haha gotta love that!!!

The personal shopper lady picked out a wrap dress by Diane Von Furstenburg. I hope it will fit!! I know they tend to run small... I also know that is one dress I will wear often and for a long, long, long time!! Thanks for making me feel better about it Reb!
Now what do I do about shoes!?!?! They don't sell reasonably priced shoes at NM! And there is no way, even if we could afford to, that I am buying a $500 pair of shoes for this dinner! Maybe we'll hit a shoe warehouse on our way out of town. Surely i can muster the energy to walk through aisle after glorious aisle of shoes!!!
Thanks everyone for reading my fruivolous tirade/vent.
