Hysterectomy: October 20th, 2003

I'm new here!
Hi, Tully -- Yes, it's scary when the doctor recommends any type of surgery. Are you sure he said the word "colostomy?" Many women (including myself) have surgery at the same time as a hysterectomy for something called rectocele -- that's where a part of the bowel protrudes into the vagina. They are able to fix it and push the bowel back into place without the need for having any sort of bag or actual involvement of the colon.
I'd recommend calling the doctor's office back to confirm what you heard, and if he's recommending an actual colostomy, ask why. I've learned from my experience that it's better to have answers to your questions than to have to worry about them.
Good luck to you!
