Iron doing a number on my stomach

I found out that I need a hysterectomy about 2 weeks ago. About a week prior to finding that out my GYN said that I was more anemic than she thought so she told me to take 325 miligrams of iron a day. It really does a number to my stomach though. I take it with food. I feel that the stomach isn't as bad if I take it at night. I just feel icky all the time. I don't know if I can wait til Dec 7th or not. I can't believe that I will have to keep taking it for that long. Any advice would be great.

There is a brand called Slow Fe. It isn't supposed to cause as much irritation because it is time released. Might be worth checking into.

Is it something I need a prescription for, or can I buy it over the counter?

OTC I see it at Walgreens all the time.

Also, if you have to take more than one pill a day, split them to one after lunch & one after dinner.

be sure and check the mgs as the over the counter stuff isn't usually as strong as the prescription the doc gives you. Make sure you're taking the same amount

I was diagnosed with anemia in June. Always had trouble with iron, but my Dr. gave me a prescription for iferex 150. It is prescription, but insurance doesn't cover it. About $10. Dr. says it is more easily absorbed than others. I find that with taking the iron, eating is a must, but not alot. Otherwise, stomach is full and the capsule seems to dissolve in throat-yuk.
So, I take it with orange juice (to help absorbtion) and some crackers,
about 15-20 minutes before a meal. Works like a charm for me.
also, try not to lie down for 20 minutes after taking the iron.

I take something called Ferro Sequels. It is over the counter, you can get it at Wal-Mart or Walgreens. I pay about $25.00 for a box (100 pills per box). It is well worth the money! I am also anemic. I take 300 mg; 2 pills in the morning, 2 in the afternoon and 2 in the evening. It is VERY gentle on the stomach and causes NO constipation at all! I am almost 2 weeks post op. and the dr. says I can probably stop taking them in about a month. Of course they will check my blood level first. Hi! I had the same problems tolerating the oral iron supplements. Now I get iron IV infusions whenever my levels get low. I feel so much better now
