Just had full hysterectomy 4/7/07.NP gave me a script for Estradiol and I'm so affraid of taking them /or any hormone meds ..Reading about side effects and all, I'm wondering will it do more harm then good?I'm just starting with the hot flashes, night sweats ,weaking up just about every 3hrs. and last night was the worst with no rest at all! .I fear breast cancer, heart problems and weight gain..
Can someone help ..

Not sure about taking Estradiol
Whether or not you take hormones is really a personal choice. It comes down to a matter of your quality of life, your health history, etc. If you have no history of breast cancer or blood clots and you are pretty healthy otherwise, you may find that the benefits outweigh the risks of taking estrogen. Most of us in surgical menopause find that our quality of life is greatly affected by not taking hormones. You really need to discuss it with your doctor. Keep a journal of your symptoms. From what you are describing, you are experiencing classic menopause symptoms and the only thing that really helps with surgical menopause is estrogen. There are many forms of replacement you could try, such as patches, pills, creams, etc. If you are scared of pills, maybe you could try a patch.

Not sure about taking Estradiol
Some of the most prominent symptoms are listed here on this link. You may want to use this as a checklist and bring it to your doctor when describing your symptoms.

The symptoms under lack of estrogen are the most common immediate symptoms of surgical menopause. You may have some of the symptoms listed from loss of the other hormones too. Some doctors do not like to prescribe progesterone if you have no uterus, some doctors do. I would suggest if you do decide to take hormones to start out with estrogen only and get that balanced and then decide whether you need to add something else. Hope this helps.

Not sure about taking Estradiol
happy
I totally understand your fears about taking bhrt. I know how you feel.
I had my hyster 7/06 and have been on bhrt since 11/06. My symptoms were so intense that I gave up and went on bhrt and I am very glad I did. I was suffering way too much. Mostly I was depressed, moody, weepy, sleep deprived, and sweating to death. I am still working on the sleep issue.
You need to feel comfortable with anything you put in your body. Maybe you could read some books to help you make your decision. I borrowed every menopausal book from my local library.
Speak with your DR/NP and tell him/her all your fears. You will be amazed how much better you'll feel.
I agree with Carol . .it comes down to a quality of life issue. I didn't want to take hrt but my life became such a train wreck. On bhrt I'm getting my life back.
Some things I learned about taking hrt . . .estrogen and progesterone can strengthen bone health, cardiovascular health, and can help keep your brain healthy.
Write your questions/fears/concerns down for your Dr. I do that so I won't forget something important to ask.
Best of luck on making your informed decision on your post hyster/ hrt journey!
