Hi everyone! I am home and feeling great. I just have to remind myself to slow down.

My uterus was the size of a 4 month pregnancy. I did lost two units of blood - so the day after surgery was a little tough getting up without being dizzy.

But by evening I was walking around and feeling good.

Well no wonder, my uterus was trying to suck in it's own blood supply. No wonder I was tired so much!

Hope everyone had a good experience this week too!

Good experience? Yes, if you like your abdomen to feel like it's been hit with a baseball bat a few hundred times. Oh, yea, feels great.

Well I am fortunate, my stomach is a little sore but not bad at all. I already feel like I have more energy than before.

I think I am one of the fortunate as well. Sure, I am sore, but really not as much as I was before the surgery. It will take awhile to get back on my feet, but overall the experience is very positive. I guess it is all in the perspective. Be well, and take good care!

I went into surgery yesterday 2/16 around 11am and got home around 1am this morning. Surgery went well but thats about it. I am very upset about my treatment other than the surgery itself. I was scheduled to have a TLH. My doctor told me I could not have a vaginal since I've never had a natural childbirth. I woke up in a considerable amount of pain. My back was killing me. They do this surgery with table tilted and you are literally upside down with your head towards the floor. I had alot of morphine in post-op and I just wanted to sit or stand up to get the pressure off my back. The nurse would not let me and kept saying we cannot aleviate all pain. I know that but I was in considerable pain. She kept asking to rate 1-10 and she would discount my pain because I would drift off for a minute or two. She said if I were in alot of pain that would not be possible. Whatever, she just got on my nerves. That was just the beginning. When I moved to my room the nursing staff were crazy and complaining. When I wanted to sit in the chair upon arriving, the nurse snapped at me and stated she was having a "b**** of a day". Finally I got everthing hooked up and moved to the chair and stood up and my back started feeling better. However the catheder hurt like h***. I have had many catheders and none have ever hurt like this one. I felt like I was being stuck with needles. Oh yea, the recovery room nurse discounted the catheder pain and said it was that way because I had a LAVH (I had a TLH, I think) More about that in a minute. Finally I got the catheder taken out around. It took a while to pee and it burned really bad at first. By 9pm I was going pretty good.

The most pathetic thing that happened to me was when I asked for pain meds around 6, my nurse asked me why did I need pain meds. I got a little sarcastic with my answer and almost threatened to pull her uterus out.
I could have screamed. They gave me a hard time about walking and everything. Around 10 I had to ask for more pain meds and didn't get them until 12a when I was being discharged. I never saw my doctor after surgery and he only talked to my dhfor 2 minutes to tell him everything went fine. Anyway upon discharge they gave me post-op care instructions for a LAVH. I have no idea what procedure they performed on me. The only good thing is my doctor is the best in the state for lap hyst. I am going to call his office Monday to find out what kind of procedure I had.

Today I feel okay but a lot of gas pain. I have eaten alot of vanilla pudding because it tends to neutralize the bitter taste in my mouth. I am so glad to be home. I am taking percocette and 800 mg of ibuprofen every 4 hours. I take the percocette and 2 hrs later I take the ibuprofen. Also taking alot of gas x , phenergen and colace. Gas is in my abdomin not shoulders so I am grateful for that. I am so glad to be home and to have this is over.

Sherri, sounds like you had a hell of a time at the hospital! I had my surgery the 14th & was alittle frightened that I was sent home 24 hours later in alot of pain but I just keep taking the percocette & ibuprofen, drinking a ton of water, gas-x and ducolax and I had my first BM this morning. I feel like hell but I just keep concentrating that this will be for a very short period & each day i do feel alittle better. I haven't slept for more than 1 hr. since night before my surgery so am beyond tired so going to call the Dr. to see what she suggests. I tried taking Tylenol PM last night & didn't help, I've been up since 2 a.m. I think in my case I may be moving around too much which results in a tremoundously swollen sore belly but since I have to use the bathroom every 10 minutes I can't help it. I'm trying to focus on the positives which I know is really hard as I feel horrible 50% of the time but every day seems to be better. I just took some more pain meds so going to lay down & see if I can sleep - so happy to have this site to vent my fears & feelings - it helps so much!

My surgery was on Tuesday. Abdominal Hysterectomy with left ovary removed. The surgeon was very kind. the nurses howevever...most were okay but they gae way too many mixed messages. They told me what activities I was to do each day and I did them. The first day, surgery day, I was expected to just stand at the side of the bed and breathe, while they made sure I didn't fall over. The next day, the surgeon came in in the morning and said that I was to take the morphine injections when needed and they were presrcibed for every three hours with no stop order on them. I was told, by the nurses, to take a shower and walk around the unit block twice that day. I did three circuits. By evening the nurses were reluctant to give me the morphine and complained I hadn't been doing enough activity! They suggested that I wait with the next morphine shot for another half hour if I could. Fine, I did, then asked. A new shift of nurses was on then and they told me I could have Tylenol 3 now or wait until bedtime, then they could give me the morphine. Tylenol 3 in the past has worked about as well as sugar pills, so I waited. They said they would come by in about an hour with the shot. Two hours later...they finally came with the shot. I slept for three hours and woke again from pain. Then, in desperation, tired the tylenol 3 with a sleeping pill. I dozed a bit till morning. Surgeon came to see me again, said things were going fine. Told me the fibroid had weighed about as much as a bowling ball. No wonder it hurt. He told me to take the tylenol 3 every four hours as needed and to get lots of rest. The nurses told me to take a shower and walk the circuit 4 times. I complied, except walked 6 times...I wanted to go home. Evening shift comes on and complains I'm taking too many meds. I'm following docs orders. I have fibromyalgia. I feel pain quickly but I don't complain quickly. I try to brush it off. Another nurse comes in for "wound check" and get mad at me becuase I've been taking showers without getting bandage changed or removed. What the ****? They were the ones that told me!! I got my pain meds at bedtime after aruging with nurse over getting 2 Tylenol 3, instead of 1 tylenol 3 and 1 regular tylenol. I was afraid to ask for more meds, so I went without anymore till morning. I kept waking from the pain and tried mental techniques to control it. I slept very poorly. Friday morning, I was still in bed when nurse came to check and I was in tears. She asked if I needed pain meds and I nodded cuz I couldn't talk. 20 minutes later, I was still weeping and she asked if the pain meds weren't working, that's when I asked her what it was that nurses want. I tried to follow doc orders and nurses orders and still got in trouble. Doc came in a few minutes later and said he would prefer if I stayed an additional day but that I was doing well and if I preferred I could go home later that day. I asked when?? His reply, as soon as you can get a ride. I called my daughter immediately and my husband was there by 10AM with a bed rail in the car. I still feel weak as a kitten but am getting better every day. Every Time I go to the bathroom I take a walk about the house and do a quick chore, be it clean the bathroom mirror or start the washer. I want to get well as quickly as possible. I hate this dependence.

Home and recovering

Hi all, I had my hyst. on 2-13. I stayed the night in the hosp. When I woke up after surgery I felt like I couldn't breath, very nauseated and I felt like I had to have a BM. My hardest thing was urinating after the surgery. The catheter didn't want to come out(ouch) and after that I had to be cathed two times and then they taught me how to cath myself. Gas pains were bad. Nursing staff was great. Let me get up on my own when I wanted to and brought as much jello as I wanted(yum) and brought pain meds as needed without too much of a wait at all. I'm doing OK I guess. Just don't know how long until I am back to normal. I get tired easily and really JITTERY. I'm trying to leave the heavy meds alone and just take Motrin today. That's my story!
