Endometrioma/"Chocolate Cyst" Question

Hello --
I am sched for TAH on 9/12. I am 42 years old. I am also going to have the left ovary removed due to a large "chocolate cyst" (hoping to keep the right ovary!). We have been monitoring the cyst for 2 mos, and it has not increased or decreased in size, but the radiologist doesnt like the looks of the surface of the ovary. Will also have the TAH due to very heavy periods w/ much cramping. Has anyone else had to deal with a "choc cyst", and did you have to have the ovary surgically removed, or just the cyst removed? PS - the "Lose the U" happy hour is on for 9/9! Thanks!

Endometrioma/"Chocolate Cyst" Question

I had a chocolate cyst on my left ovary and everything was taken out! However, I also have endometriosis (and had it on both ovaries) which is why the surgeon wanted to take both ovaries out. I do know that I had a lot of pain on my left side with every period. Your situation may be different so I am not sure if your surgeon would be willing or able to preserve the ovary or not. Maybe someone will come along with more help on that one. Anyway, enjoy your party and have one for me too!

Endometrioma/"Chocolate Cyst" Question

Hi japonica,

I found out the day of my surgery that I had a cyst and doc was surprised when I told him that it was more than likely on the left side. He asked me how I knew I had it and I just had to explain to him that I have been having pains for a while on the left and it didn't surprise me at all. I have had cystic ovaries since I was a teenager.

However, I did know before the surgery that both my ovaries would go due to the Endo that was covering both of them.
I also found out that I had adenomyosis after the surgery from the pathology report as well.

Endometrioma/"Chocolate Cyst" Question

I am 4 weeks post op. My left ovary had a large cyst. I had wanted to keep my ovaries and just have the cyst removed from the left ovary. However, they were in such bad shape that they were both take during surgery. Before surgery, I made it clear to the doctor that I absolutely did not want to go into surgically induced menopause. I awoke in my room with an estrogen patch on my arm. I am doing great....don't miss the painful periods or that left ovary. It is wonderful to be pain free for once!

Endometrioma/"Chocolate Cyst" Question

ahhhh the chocolate cyst. I had one the size of a grapefruit rupture in January, the pain was like nothing I have ever experienced and wouldn't wish on my worst enemy! They had to remove most of one ovary. Three months later they found another the size of a volleyball on the other side, so when I did have my hyst 8/11 they had to remove everything. I have heard that some rupture and some never cause a problem. I will keep you in my thoughts. Good luck!

Endometrioma/"Chocolate Cyst" Question

Thank you so much to everyone who replied. I really appreciate your insight and comments. I am prepared for the left ovary to go. I think it is causing more pain than I actually realize. AF came to visit on 8/29, and drove home the resolve to have this surgery (although it is still scary and I cant wait until I am on my way to recovery).
Thanks again

Endometrioma/"Chocolate Cyst" Question

Hi, Esty -
I noticed you live in Columbus OH - I lived in Cinci for year and became addicted to Skyline Chili. I still miss it!
My surgery is scheduled for 7:20 am. I have my pre-op appt today, so I will find out then what time I have to arrive at the hospital. I wish you the best of luck with your surgery! Keep me posted on how you are doing, too.
