If for some reason you feel you can not safely handle the stairs into your home ask to be taken home in an ambulate. The crew will help you into your home safely. The hospital can not discharge you with out a plan. Most of us do not require assistance at discharge more than what our family/friends can offer.

No problem on the steps! I live in a really old house, and have no option but to navigate the steps a couple times a day (or more, unfortunately). I just hold the handrail and take it slow. I haven't had any problems with it at all.

I had a TAH and I live on the third floor of an apprtment and I am overweight. Doing those on a good day are not my fav. My helper has mobility issues and we were dreading the climb. I just took each step one at a time and made it with no problem, in fact I made it better than my helper who was carring all my stuff.

One step - breath - one step and you will be fine.
