Actually...I kinda want a blood transfusion

This is to continue my other post about blood transfusions during surgery, but I figured I'd start a new thread because that post seemed to be only going in the direction of it being a last resort.

Seems one in a thousand women die from a hysterectomy, but only one in approx. 200,000 people catch a disease from a blood transfusion. Maybe some of these women who died during hysterectomy should have gotten a blood transfusion?

I would rather risk catching a disease than risk my blood going too low. I do not react well to anemia. I get panic attacks, faintness, very scary thoughts and feelings. I do not want to experience this coming out of surgery. I also have low blood sugar, which doesn't help.

All I can think of is to tell my anasthesiologist not to hesitate to give me one; if he's not sure if I need one yet, just to go ahead and give it to me.

Or am I stupid?

Hi purplesea

No, IMO you don't want one unless it's absolutely necessary, such as if you're too low for surgery or if it's lifethreatening - and it's your Doc's idea. I've honestly never considered asking for one regardless of how anemic I was feeling. (and I've had quite a few) There is a recent thread called 'poll' about that in the polling place you could take a look at.
Are you taking iron supplements for your anemia? You might want to check with your Doc about that - it does help alot.
