Do I have to use HRT?

When do you need to start taking them? If I keep my ovaries, do I need then for preventive measures, to preserve what I have left?

Re: Do I have to use HRT?

Where did you read that HRT causes osteoporosis? Just the opposite... estrogen replacement can help you maintain bone density, especially if coupled with adequate doses of Vitamin D and Calcium. Perhaps you are thinking of birth control pills with synthetic progestins in them? Those progestins, like Provera, do deplete bone density.

HRT does not "make you fat", but hormone balance can indeed cause weight gain. Also, many women find that removing the ovaries can cause thyroid imbalance, which can lead to weight gain.

Talk with your DR about these concerns before your surgery so you have a plan in place for HRT/no HRT that works for you.

Good luck with your surgery!
